I gross-out at 90000 lbs. pulling a tri-axle hopper, so i use the (trolley brake) to help me slow down on hills.
Is there any practical use for a trolley break?

I wasn't trying to criticize them or put them down, just curious is all so figured I would ask. I like to know all I can about every piece of equipment I use, couldn't find a lot in a handful of searches I did before turning here for answers. Supposedly I am an experienced driver so didnt want to ask anyone where I work if there was any preferences/uses for it.
The conclusion is pretty much self explanatory why there was no info about it: Biggest thing is its easier or more convenient than hitting the red button, can be used to power slide 18 wheeler around corners on slick roads, makes red lights come on, on da trailer, burn up trailer breaks than use tractor breaks to slow down near bottom of pass ( only wussies gear down and use engine breaks when descending grades)
Thanks to all who responded, good or bad, its all good.scottied67 Thanks this. -
If you're in a difficult backing situation, you can pull your mechanical tandem, slide your wheels to the rear, put the wheels at your pivot point then (I know it's hard on the outside radius tires, but not too bad if done slowly and carefully) turn around your inside axles while sliding the tandem forward. This would be used rarely in extreme situations.
Otherwise, I use my johnny bar to check whether my service brakes are working and to slide my tandems. I do not use it for descending hills. I'm one of those wusses who rides the jake down in a lower gear.scottied67 and The Challenger Thank this. -
OP, you get yer trailer a wee bit sideways on an icy patch and that trolley brake just might straighten her right out. Been there, done that. Slow ya down a bit going down a steep hill, too. And it's good for when people ask if it's some kind of gearshift lever. "Oh, yeah. I use that to shift the gears on the trailer's tranny. But only for really heavy loads."

Thats what I've always heard, is that it straightens out a jacknife, but I haven't yet been in such a situation to find out, and hope I don't any time soon...

When I used to pull a company trailer with my tractor...I used the trolley brake a lot in the hills so that I wore the companies brakes out instead of mine.

I do like the idea of using it to straighten out a jacknife though. And to think all the times on ice and snow every time my trailer would start to slide a bit I would let of the breaks and apply just a hair of throttle, what the F###! was I thinking! One of these days I'll learn (probably not).
Sliding trailer tandems? No! I like using the red knob, and doing it the old fashion way. I will use almost any excuse I can use to get out of the truck and get even the smallest bit of exercise.scottied67 Thanks this. -

I've always used it to test the trailer brakes on a trailer I just picked up. Get going about 3 mph, pull the trolley brake and make sure you've got brakes back there.
