I've driven flatbeds around Chicago. Yea very interesting locations. I've delivered to navy pier, the planetarium, the aquarium, and museums. Just about everywhere. Just tricky getting to places that trucks aren't meant to go oversized. Whereas warehouses have good access routes 90% of the time.
With about 5 years of pulling a 48' flatbed and backing into what ever. When I thought I did a crap job backing and think everyone was watching me. After I got parked, I would watch other drivers have the same problems I had . Which would make me feel a little better about myself.
Obviously you haven't been to any of those old grocery warehouses built back when trucks were thirty ft long.
Oh I have. And they're not a fraction as hard as driving onto the sidewalk of a major univerisity in downtown chicago while students are still walking around... then unloading it with a crane and those people don't even look up from their phones. They'll just walk right past cones like they're not there.
I've done both and i gotta say I'll take those crane loads and unloads every day vs those tight old buildings. People will move as you squeeze them. Buildings and concrete poles won't.
Oh yeah I've done both of those and what's harder is backing a subcompact out of a grocery store parking spot while the wife yaps in your ear that your not doing it right!
