Bobtail merging onto the freeway smacked my little blindside mirror but main mirror not damaged. I had to cut it off the dangling wires.

Would D.O.T. write a citation for this or am I okay with big mirror being undamged ?

I would say NO. They don't specify what type of mirror, only that a mirror is required.

There are not blindside mirrors on the hood so I wasn’t sure.

This site is acting funny today.

You are required two big mirriors for DOT on equipment rules in the green FMCSA Book.

You will be replacing those little mirrors at your own cost. And it would be good to do it soon because if the DOT sees THAT, what else might be wrong with that truck? It's a opportunity for a nice slow inspection that might generate even more revenue.

So you’re saying they cant get me on the mirror but would use it as an excuse to target me.

    Yeah I can see that.

    It would be nothing personal.

I ran into this problem when doing some dump truck work. Sometimes DOT would be all over me because I forgot a small detail. hehe.

    Not a violation.

    §393.80 Rear-vision mirrors.

    (a) Every bus, truck, and truck tractor shall be equipped with two rear-vision mirrors, one at each side, firmly attached to the outside of the motor vehicle, and so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway to the rear, along both sides of the vehicle. All such regulated rear-vision mirrors and their replacements shall meet, as a minimum, the requirements of FMVSS No. 111 (49 CFR 571.111) in force at the time the vehicle was manufactured.
