I was talking to an Owner Operator last week and he said he pull flatbed for a small company and they pay him $1.50 a mile. He said that OP are paid $1.50 loaded and empty. Even if he has to dead head 300 miles he still gets $1.50 a mile. In other words every mile he drives he gets $1.50. The company does not have any fuel discounts. Is it worth it?
Is this a good deal.

Our contractors averaged 1.85/mi on all miles, loaded or empty, this year. We haul a lot of heavy equipment and other over size loads, which tend to pay better than normal flatbed freight. Our fuel discount averages around .20/gallon.
At 1.50/mi you should be making money, but you aren't getting rich. In my opinion, you could probably net about the same as a company driver at a good open deck company. You should be getting compensated for the additional risk of managing your own business as an ind contractor.BigBadBill, 25(2)+2, rickybobby and 1 other person Thank this. -
Exactly! Too many operators forget how much they have held up in their equipment. At 1.50 all miles, you r making less net revenue (about .30/mi) than many company guys who also have benefits and, don't forget, no risk!
Not a good deal for me.Last edited: Dec 30, 2012

Very low for open deck. Need to look at it as you are making about $.05-.08/mile more than mileage dry van guys. And most offer fuel discounts.
You have to wonder how much the care about the O/O. We are small and even we have fuel discounts.
