The most I ever had was what I did heavy haul with, 10 and the deep reduction I used to get started when I had a load on board.
Is this an 18 speed?

I thought the chrome knob was to designate it as a 12513 versus a 9513. Small package must remember that trans shortcomings, bearings in the back half wore down fast if you had a big horse that trans would howl in OD.

99% of the time the auxiliary is in direct and I just shift the 13. Than that gives me one more shift to 4th on the aux for another Od. Around 4 gears thoughout the range are so close they overlap and feel redundant anyway. This set up was put in back when my Uncle bought the ‘67 Pete new to do a cattle run up thru the rockies in to Montana every other week. The unlimited amount of gears helped that 335 pull good and stay cooler.

Not sure on the chrome vs. plain thing. You could be right. I’ve always seen them on the fancier spec stuff. The oe trans in my Pete was a 9513 with the same chrome knob I have on it now. Uncle put in a 12513 that had chrome one in around ‘92 from one of his ‘74 359’s that was layed over. I’ve still got that one somewhere in a box. The oe 335 in the ‘67 was needing its 3rd in frame so he just rebuild the 350 from the wreck and put it and its trans in instead. The gray knob in my pic is on a 9513 behind a 250.
Yes they are whiners. The 95 is a screamer. With the way I’m geared you know when you are running about 60mph in od cause its hollering at you. Step it up to 62-65 and it calms down a lot.
With that being said I don’t think either of those trannys were ever apart for anything. The 95 is a leaker the 125 so far isn’t. The 125 shifts kinda heavy these days but nothing I’m getting worried about.Brettj3876, Dale thompson, 650cat425 and 3 others Thank this. -
Reminds of my rookie year I took a 16 spicer on a week long trip . I admit I was glad I was on flat ground because those positions in the knob confused me lolDale thompson, SmallPackage, 650cat425 and 2 others Thank this.

IDK your age nor altitude haha... but yep, in my rookie days... wow, just wow. Kinda digging up trenches just trying to help (and learn!) from Scottie's conundrum.
I learned on twin sticks too, Mackey. Paw paw had 3. Nowadays, peeps are LUCKY to learn on ONE, and keep that dadgum 'E' off their CDL.

The old man drove a 3408 powered KW with an 18x4 wayyyyy back when he started out. 72 gears is just a bit overkill lol.scottied67, bad-luck, Dale thompson and 3 others Thank this.

I’ve never operated the spicer 16. I have seen them them in trucks. Apparently they also had a very rare spicer 20 of which i’ve only seen literature on. The old timers tell stories about them things leaving you sitting still a lot in those days and how they got replaced with the Road Ranger 13’s pretty quickly. I know my Uncle told me years ago that all the truck salesman were pushing that spicer 16 pretty hard back then and when he ordered the Pete were almost twisting his arm to put one in the ‘67. He went with the also new at the time 9513. He made the right choice.scottied67, G13Tomcat, magoo68 and 1 other person Thank this.

Yes it is for sure. It can take you miles before you are done shifting. On the old engines you don’t have enough hp to maintain the speed you need to run to even be able to use the last top gears anyway. Lol!scottied67, MACK E-6, Dale thompson and 3 others Thank this.

It was all off highway winter road hauling. I doubt they'd ever have gotten those trucks much higher than about 60 km/h lol. Maybe in the spring when they were on the highway south lol.scottied67, Dale thompson and 650cat425 Thank this.
