Does anyone else find any fault in the person behind the register? That person had to know the op
    was slicing the line.
IMO, I think the register operators should speak-up, point out there is a line, and tell the "self-guided one" to go to the back of the ONE and ONLY line.

I don't think most of the folks behind the counter give a rat's behind about inconveniencing anyone. Half the time it seems like they are just fiddling with stuff pretending like they are busy so they can't check you out. Impossible to even tell which ones are even open most of the time

If there is one line with 7 people and one line with 3, I'm getting the line with 3 people in it. If you have an issue with it, tough. You should have equaled the lines out. Especially if the lines are far apart. Now if there are two registers open and they are beside one another with one line, then yes, I agree...But in Pilot/Flying J's, I've rarely seen that. Just in the Quik Trips or whatever they are up in like Minnesota. And they are roped off with a sign saying wait for next cashier.

The line was open, otherwise he couldn't have paid for his candy bar. He didn't cut in front of anyone because he was the last one in that line.

It's possible that there was only one cashier for a while, which caused the long line. Then another employee came to help and said something like, "I can take the next guest." You ran over and paid for your snack. Kind of was a dick move since others had been waiting. But perhaps the others in line weren't paying attention, so you took the opportunity while they were spacing out. This kind of thing happens everywhere when a register opens up, not just truck stops.

Speedway at 79th and Harlem in Chicago has express for truckers. One register, no waiting!
Walk in and give them your fuel card without waiting in line and when done fueling walk in and step up to that register to sign your fuel slip.

Truck stops should create "safe spaces" for truck drivers that are easily offended.
What should the drivers in the long line do, have a group discussion as to who should be next in line?
Nothing surprises me any more at truck stops. I was standing alone at the TA in Knoxville looking at CB radios in a glass case. Some clown walked up to me and started shouting that he heard me make a racist remark to him. I guess my dumbfounded look made him realize I had no idea what he was blathering about. I did ease my ball point pen out of my pocket in case he pushed his paranoia too far and might have to give him an eye shot.

No use common sense, 2 registers open and one line means when one register becomes free the next person in the single file line is next to use that register not some one who walks up with a candy bar and thinks he is more important than everyone else.
