I recently accidentally hit my air slide button in my semi truck. So naturally, I get out to check and make sure the pins are pushed in. I noticed that one of the notches directly to the left of the locking pin has a crack in it. I don’t know if this is normal or not. This is my first time looking at it since this is a newer truck Freightliner Cascadia, 50k miles. The other side doesn’t seem to have one that is symmetrical. I did the tug test and everything is good. Is this normal? And I’m talking about the crack on the inside of one of the holes NOT the one on the outside between the two holes.

I've never seen that before. But honestly, ALMOST every 5th wheel I have ever looked at had enough grease and dirt to cover such a crack. Also that's the part of the 5th wheel I wouldn't look at very hard anyway. I would mostly just look at pin engagement and cracks near the bolts holding the 5th wheel plate to the frame. I don't know what I would do in your situation. I guess I could tell you it's always better to be too safe than not safe enough. That's probably what drivers are supposed to say.

Don’t think those are cracks. I’ve seen many rails pieced together like that so no material is wasted when made.

You’re right I don’t believe those are cracks at all.

Agreed. Second pic, the outside rail underneath the actual 5th wheel plate has the exact same cut inverted.

I think it's not a problem, connections to the frame are important, however, it's good you noticed that, good job! I could make a joke about "crack in my 5th wheel", but the gals may not like it,
