    Guess not.

But that’s where I morally “checkout” from this ridiculous idea that a cotter pin is gonna hold a lever binder (that isn’t going anywhere to begin with) over a bungee because a pencil pusher says so?

    I’ll keep my bungees.

I’m not telling anyone here it’s the right way. It’s the way I’ve found works best and is the least amount of effort and money spent on my end. If a machine goes flying off my deck someday it won’t be because of the bungees against the binder. Nor will any of the DOT-compliant methods prevent such an event from happening... But a lawyer will say otherwise and that’s okay by me.

The one that got me was using bungies to hold lumber in the landing gear. Got an unsecured load ticket my first year. “ I was unladen at the time” Thought that was silly? But I use a strap now.

I asked, I can use a only bungee to hold on 160 lbs of tarp but not to hold lumber from sliding 8” sideways in the landing gear?

I’ve always been told bungees are not considered tie downs because they do not have a WLL...

I’ve always asked then how tarps without straps over the tops are legal? Most will back pedal and say that they aren’t — tarps require straps thrown over the top to make it legal in the eyes of DOT.

    It’s bloody nonsense. My opinion.

    I knew you weren’t.

I dived into this awhile back and couldn’t justify the cost as a company man when I’ve never met an honest man who has been hassled by DOT over bungees securing lever binders... don’t know anyone who has that didn’t have a slew of crap ####ed up elsewhere.

Always had a 2” on the dunnage on the landing gear...

I used bungees all the time on the headache rack. It’s not DOT legal. Everything needs to be secured with a tie down with a WLL........ that includes the tarp sitting on top of the load. Right.

No pic, but I may be able to talk you thru this.
    Suicide.
Long chain. Hook one side to left side rear of Coil. Run chain through eye to right side rear, around spool or pocket, attach binder and tighten. Still on right, take chain go around next pocket through the eye and hook around next pocket. Go bac to the right and add binder.
Do the same for the front and you will have used 2 chains but 4 points.

    Shotgun

Left front long chain. Hook chain around spool or pocket, go through the eye to right front, around pocket, binder. Take excess chain go to next pocket back (nearer to the eye), around pocket, through eye and hook onto pocket on left 1 back from first pocket. Go back to right side and attach binder. Do the same for a rear pull and you will have 2 chains but 4 points.

Although I usually used binder locks on lever binders (both clip type and cable), no one has ever shown me any law saying they are required. Lots of customers required them, but to the best of my knowledge they are not required in Canada (nor the US). And if you do use something, there is no rating requirement of any kind to meet.

Do devices used in conjunction with a securing device to prevent a tiedown from becoming loose, unfastening, opening or releasing while the vehicle is in transit require a WLL marking (eg. metal rod on load binder)?

    No.

A properly used over-centre (lever) binder will not come undone.

You dont have to hook straight to the trailer. If you had hooked the binder to the chain on the othet side of the spill it would of worked. 1 chain 2 binders works, but there must be slack in the chain where it drapes over the trailer to the other side.

It's difficult to explain in text. basically you are making your chain into two chains without physically cutting it in half. Maybe someone can post a picture.

See this is where we all end up in a fight.... I hear both versions. Tarp is not part of the load, so it isnt bound by securement guidelines. Others say it is part of the load and must have straps over it.

I should of read more of the thread before first replying. This picture shows what i meant, just instead of hooking right to the trailer i loop the chain around a spool.
