With all the Class C amplifiers and dirty harmonic spewing radios down there, they probably are transmitting in the VHF aeronautical band.:biggrin_25525:

I have attempted it...put the Ch19 freq in the radio, heard some folks, but never got a reply...we were pushing 200watts and a 200' antenna...maybe I just had too much power.

200W is considered low power to many CB ops now a days.:biggrin_255:

I herd the same guy a few days ago. He was going over KY and I was almost in Jackson TN. I forgot where he was heading. He sounded real to me.. I couldn't get back to him with the 500 under my seat but he was loud for sure

I was only catching half the conversion but I remember he was somewhere around KY and IN coming back from around the North east and headed out West. I wasn't paying much attention until I herd he was on a c130 then I turned the volume up lol you dont hear that everyday and he defiantly wasn't no truck driver

BubbaZ -- Think of the radiation pattern of your endfed Zepp antenna (in trail, I presume, with a drag so it was more-or-less horizontal?) At around 5-1/2 wavelengths, if you were able to make it resonant without leaving all of those 200 watts in the base match, then your pattern would have been pretty much a cone facing aft, almost as if you were an air refueling tanker. Not *that* cut-and-dried, of course; there'd still be a lot of little side lobes, but between your pattern and your nominal 40:1 power advantage over any of the legal mobiles you were trying to reach, I'd be surprised if anyone who could hear that fairly tight aft-facing lobe could direct enough RF back *into* that lobe for you to have heard them.

It'd be a great exercise in trying to spoof enemy HF-DF where you wanted them to think you were, based upon where you were 20 minutes ago, though :)

OTOH, I don't know anything about this. You might be flying with an omni loop that's 200 ft in diameter, suspended by E-2s with wings strapped onto their backs and tow ropes, like blue flightsuited formation water skiiers. I really have no idea how modern aviation HF stuff works.

These are not the droids you're looking for.....
