Walmart sells a little dongle, broadband adapter, that connects to your computer through usb.

It is made or labeled by Virgin Mobile but uses sprint network. I think the gizmo cost $89, and you get up to 5 gig per month for $20. If your month or bandwidth expires it will let you online to pay another month.
Not good for netflix but fine for posting, looking at google earth to spot customers and parking...email, etc. You may spot a little diner to eat at that is walking distance but you didn't see it when you pulled into the truck stop.

It works in places where I lose cell service so I can skype home on nights when I can't call.

Truck stop wifi is robbery. no bandwidth.

I'm waiting/hoping ipad 3 will be jailbroken soon so I can get it and use it with my iphone... when the iphone 5 (or whatever it'll be called comes out with 4g) that'll be a happy day... and when they jailbreak it a few months later or weeks :biggrin_25514:

Can't even imagine how much data I'll use then... if I'm going thru 12-16gb/month now.

I guess I should switch to verizon... is tethering possible?

But it seems like you can only have 2GB of tethering? "Verizon normally charges $20/month for 2GB of data for its iPhone tethering plans" http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/06/14/ios-5-free-tethering-verizon-iphone/

How much skype calls can you get on $20? I have no sense of how much it a certain GB of internet is. Can you make HD video calls?

I always find I need a connection when there isn't one around.

50 dollars a month for a wify card is so worth it. Google earth is my best friend.

I was in Half moon bay last month, couldn't make the corner and had to back out to the highway. Tried GPS that was a disaster, backed out to the highway. Google earth Bingo.

Truck stop wyfi sucks, everyone is using up all the bandwidth to down load porn I guess.

Don't bother with the FJ or Pilots WiFi, unless you remember and like the speeds you got of your old 14.4 modem back in the day.

Is it like one of those antenna boosters? I was thinking of getting one of those to help pull in signal from coffee houses, Mcdonalds, ect. places I might not be able to pull into their driveway.

Well with my plan I'm grandfathered into the unlimited Internet. So I can use it all I want.

I had to switch plans and no longer have the unlimited data but I bought the least amount of data which was like 2g's and went over about 20 days into the month. Its only $8 if you go over and that covers another 2g's more! So figured I'd just leave it alone and pay the little bit extra if I go over. I like listening to Iheart radio because a lot of my radio programs are on there and I can blue tooth them in the car or truck. This is what eats up my data though.

    That or an iPad.

My iPad comes in REAL handy! It's a lot easier when it comes to using Google Maps for example vs my laptop. All my driving is oilfield and I contently need to view maps. I also use it for forums an watching Netflix. It's has wifi & 3G capability which allows me to save money when staying at places with wifi but also having Internet else where without wifi. Now I spend most of my time off the beaten path on smaller high ways. I used to have Sprint service wih my old phone and it sucked once I got off the interstate. So I switched to Verizon which was a HUGE difference! I can get service out futher off the beaten path.
