The only thing I can suggest in a situation like your second test is to be vocal. Let the examiner know what you're doing and why. You'll get it next time!

Sorry to hear you having issues passing the road part of the test.
As someone said if you can test at a different spot then do so as the change of both roads taken and the testers can make all the difference.
I was told of a few students in my school in CT that test in NY and at 1 place there is 1 turn you will fail if driving a class A rig.
Also testers have a lot to do with pass/fail. I had a good tester as I missed a gear not 100 ft out of the yard! I just told him I have not driven this truck before and the little time I had in the other day cabs the school had I had issues too. But told him I was sure with more time behind the wheel I would not have that issue. It also my have had something to do with not needing any pull ups with the maneuver part of the test before the road test?
Before I did my road test I took a bunch of deep breaths to help me relax. Also did a few out on the road as it was raining and I slid a truck stopping for a light in the rain before when out on the road with the school and did not want to do it with the tester.
Relax, breath, think ahead of time of how you will come pleat a turn. As for the stop sign stop before the line count to 5 or more and then move up SLOWLY a little at a time to check if clear. Might even tell the tester after the stop "I am going to move up so I can check traffic". That way they know your intensions.
Good luck

That's exactly what I did during my road test. While in school we also did commentary.

Thank you for that recommendation H2O and fuzz. This may have changed the way things went, I figured it was pretty obvious what i was trying to do. Guess not! I will be more vocal next test and try to explain some of the more trivial things as I'm doing them rather than after she already failed me.

It would depend how far you inched forward before making the turn.A couple inches I don't see a problem but if it was like a half trailer length then make the turn,ya I could see where you went wrong. You're slightly could be too far out before making the turn.Like H20 said next test do commentary while driving so the tester knows what exactly you're doing.

Yes Be Vocal, from a ex CDL Instructor/Tester, but remember when being vocal to actually do what you say.
When looking around getting ready to pull away move in your seat, back & forth & look in both mirrors & all directions.
If that same situations arises again say "just pulling up to get a better view" nothing in testers book that says you can't be vocal.
I had one guy going through intersections just saying "traffic check" & not doing it, turn your head rather than just moving slightly so the tester can see a definite move.Last edited: Jan 5, 2015

I did take off in 3rd on my test as I thought it was the safe thing to do.
Left turn from stop sign up a hill, traffic from my left was blind coming up the other side of the hill and did not want to spend any more time across the road than I had to for fear someone would run under my trailer. Worked out good as I did not have to shift in the intersection and had speed to do it quickly.
Normally we would start off in 2nd with an empty trailer.

I understand not shifting on RR tracks but no shifting in intersections? I don't remember that being a "no no" when I tested. What if you're loaded and sitting at a red light? Must you take the entire intersection in 2nd gear?

Probably another new law.I never got docked for shifting thru an intersection.
