Unfortunately schools these days ARE teaching students not to shift going through intersections and to never take a turn in more than 3rd gear. The result is they get into the DMV test and later into a training situation and are extremely gun-shy about giving any throttle and end up taking AGES to get through an intersection. Seems like almost all my trainees have this issue, I keep having to urge them to "GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION! GIVE IT THROTTLE!" It's more of a hazard going at idle speed in 2nd or 3rd through an intersection than GETTING THROUGH IT.

The other problem I've noticed is the schools seem to teach that when you come to a stop, like a stop sign, you have to see the stop line ahead of your hood. This means the student stops at least 10 feet behind the stop line and they are constantly having to creep forward to the actual stop line in order to watch for oncoming traffic. Stop AT THE STOP LINE. Then you don't have the issue of having to creep forward.

Yep, it's the law that you must stop behind the line, then you are allowed to creep up for visibility. Must do it that way for the CDL test, but crazy for most real life situations.

It's the law to stop behind the stop line, but that doesn't mean you have to stop 10-15 feet behind the stop line in order to see the stop line over the hood. Learn how to stop at or just before the stop line and you'll be just fine. It's part of the skills test anyway, use it.

That's crazy, I wonder if their instructors are teaching them that.

Here is my advice. Took me total seven times to pass. I know, its a lot but I did. First, on the secomd turn. Once stopped explain what you are going to do before you do it. I was told that was one of most important things and I always did that. Second, this will seem a bit strange, but wear a ball cap, why? Some of us, when we turn oir heads to check mirrors may not have to swing their neck much. So, looks like you dont do mirror checks, but if they see a ball cap moving they will know that you are checking mirrors. (Ohio dot tester told me that.) Third, in words of one of my former instructors, "just drive the ####### truck." I made small talk on my last test and passed because relaxed me and I was just able to drive best I know how. Good luck.
