I have a cobra 18, one of those cheap $50 ones ( please no smart a.s.s. comments, real advice ) i also have a custom made coaxial, pretty good shape and i have a bunch of different antennas that i switch feom bc none seem to get the best benefit. I have a a firestick i found in the trash, couple of them actually, and a K 50 i thinks its called with tuneable tip. Npw here is my problem:

    1) in the morning buttons are harder to turn
    2) no white noise even when squelch is all the way down
    3) cb ocassionally finds itself on another channel. Dunno Why.
    4) even though the meter shows my output is all the way up, every time i talk i rarely get feedback. Sometimes i have to ask and ask and ask for radio check and then finally i get one. Someone responds that its working.

Im wondering if im really reaching out there or what. Right now i dont have the money to upgrade to the finest equiptment but what are some simple solutions that wont break the bank that i can do for now? I use my cb in my job.

you need to get someone to check the SWRs. if you have tried all those antennas, and hear nothing, i would bet your coax is shorted, or there is a problem with the radio. seeing how you are having knob problems and random channel changing, i would bet the radio is the problem. you need to have the radio checked out and have the antenna system checked as well. any one of those being bad or a combo of them all will drive anyone nuts.

edit: any any CB shop worth anything will check a radio for free. some charge to check SWRs, but the real honest shops usually wont. they are thinking you will buy something to fix your problem. there is one CB shop in GA that i wont mention (at the cartersville exit) that charges you to set the SWRs on the antenna he sells. how sorry is that?

The could have been in the trash because they are bad. Antennas are known to have broken wires in the after wacking a tree or two. So I also say check the SWR. Because I feel you may have a antenna system problem (antenna, coax, or ground).

You're welcome. I hope that it'll help get your radio working like it should.

There is a very good friend of mine who is big into all this and he is a ham operator , he stresses that the coax is very key in your CB that you should have min 6' to 8 ' and your coax should not be tangled up run all over paying close attention to not tangling it up , and like someone else said SWR is key also for ten to twenty dollars any CB shop will adjust this for you , I've seen good shops do it for free but good luck !!

The minimum length of coax you should have is the length needed to get from the antenna to your radio, plus maybe a foot of slack at the radio end if you ever need to pull the radio.

He is right in that you should not simply ball up extra coax. If it's an extra foot or two, coil it up neatly and secure it. More than that should be cut off; put another connector on it and keep it as a jumper.

The "multiple of 9 feet" is urban legend. It does absolutely nothing for your antenna system. The only time specific lengths of coax are needed is if you are phasing multiple antennas.

Coax should be curled in a oval or figure 8. Not in a circle.
