Looking at a 480k truck that's spec'd perfect for me but the local truckers I know say the motors are junk. The truck is already pushing it on cost I can't afford a blown engine.
It's a 2011 ISX at 500
ISX CM 2250 reliable?

I would pass, the best Cummins ISX15 motors to date are the CM2350 MY 2014 and up, as they had scrapers on the piston rings because the earlier CM2350 had carbon packing issues on the pistons.
The CM2250 had issues with the Ceramic Fuel Pump Plunger coming apart and going through the oiling system and wiping out the engine.
They also have problems with Counterbore Fretting, where the liners are rotating inside the Counterbore taking out the machining marks which the first sign would be a blown head gasket. The fix to this problem is to replace the liners with the updated ones which is almost like doing an Inframe.
There have also been problems with the Oil Pump Drive cracking causing a loss of oil pressure.
There are many Owners that have had good luck with the ISX15, but I've heard and read far less then more.
It's a Used Truck, so you're going to take your chances.
Do your research and read everything that's out there about the ISX15 or any other motor out there, ask tons of questions before purchasing any Truck and ask for receipts and service records.Last edited: Aug 28, 2016
Cat sdp Thanks this. -
Thanks for the reply.
Anything that can be done about the fuel pump?
Truck would be getting full deletes if I got it "off-road use" -
Make sure the Fuel Pump and Cam Followers were replaced already or replace the pump if you know it's the original one if you decide to purchase it.
I believe there was a TSB issued regarding this problem.Last edited: Aug 28, 2016

its known for fuel problems and egr problems, isn't that the one with overhead cams? I know the cummins with overhead cams were a pain in the ### so they changed the design

That was through cm871's which went partially into '11, his will be different

ah I see, I haven't had too much experience around isx engines, the fleet I work on is all m11, ism, n14, ntc400, 855's and Volvo d16's, why the company decided to get rid of the old pete's with 3406b's and c15's I will never know, but I'm sure #### pissed they got rid of them, those old cats pulled so much harder, a 475 was pulling better than one of these 600 d16's, they were so much easier to fix too, now I gotta use this stupid volcom stuff and cummins insight, all the #### electronic ######## haha, the c15's had electronic injection but still was so much more simple to do inframes and to maintain

also we used power box's on the cat engines, brought some from 475 to 600 and around 2k to 2200 torque
