Look at exhaust pipe. Look like something coming out and running down pipe? Mine was egr cooler 2 times.

I just recently purchased a 2012 587 Peterbilt with a 450 ISX Cummins. There is an intermittent odor of coolant and I have to top it off every day. It doesn't take much on a daily basis. The longest I went without topping it was about 2000 - 2500 miles. Took about 3/4 of a gallon. Took it back to the dealer they did a pressure test said that was fine they would have to tear it down to diagnose. Possible blown head gasket but said that is not typical in a Cummins . Said most likely the liners are sinking. Upwards of 6900.00 to repair. If the liners were sinking would I not be losing power? Losing oil pressure? Just had a full pm done with oil analysis, oil clean. Haven't noticed any mixing when pull the stick to check oil. I asked them if they check the egr valve and was told no. Any ideas?

That is a CM-2250, could be a liner issue, but I would first pressure test the EGR cooler. If the coolant is making it into your exhaust, you have even bigger issues, as the DPF and DOC don't play well with coolant. Those will more than likely need to be replaced too. Head over to Rawze.com and ask for an invite and post this over there. I would not let them tear into anything until you know what is leaking and from where. One thing you can do to diagnose if it is a liner is to drop the oil pan and pressurize the coolant system. I believe it is normally the #4 or #5 liner that likes to drop in the CM-2250. You will be looking for coolant dripping down the rod and off of the crank shaft, put a catch pan under the truck to catch any coolant that may drip out.

    Where are you located?

Also, you do know about the fuel pump issue with that motor? That will need to be addressed too.

In regards to the heads on these motors... 700,000 is the normal life span, they are disposable and need to be replaced with a new OEM head, remans fail in short order on these motors. That is very well documented.

I live in the Charlotte NC area. It was a dealer in Charlotte that had it. They did a pressure test but didn't check the egr cooler. Just wanted to tear it down. If the liners were sinking would I not be losing power? Wouldn't I be seeing a film on my dip stick? Thanks for the info I will contact RAWZE.com

When I bought the truck the sales manager told me all used trucks are fully serviced including full burn out of DPF and DOC. If they actually did that would the EGR issue, if there is one, been indicated.

No, you would not more than likely know about that issue until you were well on your way. I have been all through this with an EPA truck. Is it still under warranty at that dealer? And where are you located?

When coolant enters the emission system, it destroys the DPF and DOC filters. There is no way around that, they will need to be replaced if there is coolant intrusion.
