From Heavy Duty Trucking magazine article in 2003...

"An example of global sourcing within DaimlerChrysler, he said, is the MBE 4000 engine, made in Brazil and introduced to North America through the company's engine-manufacturing subsidiary, Detroit Diesel Corp."

The MBE got here because it didn't need to be saddled with EPA emissions controls... the truck engine manufacturers got nailed for faking emissions results but MBE wasn't sold here at the time... so they got a free pass and didn't have to have the new EGR technology... made the trucks $8,000.00 cheaper to buy.

That's why you see so many on the road. It has nothing to do with their reliability or performance.

Becouse Mercedes and MAN share suppliers, like Shwizer, Mahle and other....

But there are unique parts, like PLD units, OM457/460 do not share with popular here OM501/502 and smaller OM904/906.

Temic ECM looks like V6 ECM but you can not reprogram it! The only way - disassembly, desolder memory chips, plb and use programmer...

    Fortunatly ECMs fail rarelly....

om400 series and d25-d28 was developed together by mercedes and m.a.n. in 70's
till euro3 the single thing what was different was the inscription on cylinder head caps
pld was mercedes way to achieve euro3 om457/460 remained ,om441/442 was discontinued in favor of om501/502
not bad for a engine to be produced nearly for 40 years!

Euro3 cyl. head differs. becouse they have different injectors. It is easy to know what injector is used. E3 injectors are installed with cooper sleeve, E2 injectors are with cooper washer. Engine calibrations differ too.

But... mechanically E2 and E3 engines are the same.

seems to me you are right! Mercedes had E2 engine with EDC (Bosch MS 5.2). And it was no reason to make PLD for E2. They really made it for E3 and they use PLD for E5/EPA2010.

But Mercedes is going to introduce CRD engine in Europe and seems to me they will use Detroit Diesel Common Rail engines.

As I can see PLD is VERY RELIABLE SYSTEM, better pum injector units and better CRD (I hate to work on Premium DCi (MS6.3) ore MAN D20, D28 engines (MS7)!

cummins is better than mb4000( but anyway you will have egr problems with both of them) 13 speed eaton is more simple and reliable than auto...

he told me because he didn't want to have any problem with it that's why he disconnected. Should I be concerned if I buy the Volvo?
