You should also find out 'how' the EGR has been disconnected. If he just pulled the sensor/servo plug then the hot gasses are still hitting the cooler (at least on the newer ones). I found there were some issues with the turbo and almost like a backfire when I had mine just unplugged from the harness. Mind you, I was running hte mountains loaded heavy when these issues tended to 'pop' up. Best bet is to block the exhaust where it goes into the cooler (on my '08 at least, cooler is on the hot side).
Isx or mb 4000

No one has mentioned the anemic exhaust brake on the MBE 4000.... that alone would be a deal breaker if you ever run mountainous terrain....

He just unplugged the wires and he told me not plug it and drive like that

I have read on this forum & others , the mercedes is great on fuel, but gutless on hills
-
In Russia many drivers disconnect EGRs on their ISX and... mechanics say engine life is shorter, especially if Power rating is over 500 hp.
-
Why would that be? I would have to see that to believe it. From the looks of the intake after the egr its a wonder to me the motor even last 200,000 miles!
-
I'm not sure, becouse we use to make money here selling EGR. But EGR decreases temperature in combustion chamber and decreases thermal stress of pistons and cyl.head. May be that's why EGR makes engine life longer.
-
The mercedes is junk. I would look for a Cummins powered Volvo with the 13spd manual. That alone is great combination as you have both the reliability of the cummins engine and the 13spd which in itself is bullet proof if driven right.

IMO, OM460 is not the best Mercedes engine, but OM502 was not sold in the USA.
ISX is good engine, but EGR issues happen usually once 500k.
13sp manual is the best choise. Autos are good till run, but when fail - prepare to pay $$$$
About Volvo... IMO - copmplicated and expencive truck, to many electronic componets that may be maintaned and programmed by Volvo dealer only. -
before epa 2002 they had an 28:1 air/fuel rate, in 2002 24:1 ,disabling the egr will cause the increase of air rate but will he return to 28:1? if ammount of air will be higher ,this could result in increase of peak cylinder pressure , temperature rise and stress for powerpack componentsLast edited: Nov 27, 2010
