No one builds anything that lasts; QC and workmanship are low.
I got a 2012 freightshaker with half a mil (old GTI with ISX 450/1650) and in 4 months I've spent 4500 on it, 2800 on chassis and 1700 on engine. The emissions related items I replaced were a doser valve (x2, the first was bad from stock.) and some expensive sensors. I don't know how that compares with other vehicles of the same age but I had some money saved and was able to do the emissions work myself.
ISX or the MX 13?

That sounds about right, with the ISX. From what "Rawze" says also do the over head every 250K and do your oil changes every 10-15K Theres a couple of sensors that also need to be changed on the regular but I think you covered them in your post. Rawze is a WEALTH of quality info look him up if you havent already he's on the youtube and has his own website
rabbiporkchop and fargonaz Thank this. -
That's where I get most of my engine advise from. Ya, the overhead is pretty easy, getting the valve cover off is the hardest part on the freightliner.

Don't forget ISX has a new X15 engine out this year. So maybe they have worked more bug out of the older ISX.
MX13 could be good also they look complicated compared to DD15 or DD13. -
Pretty sure the MX is a European DAF engine built by PACCAR. I think only the aftertreatment is built by Cummins.
mxpx148, Diesel Dave and ChicagoJohn Thank this. -
I thought it was a man motor with Cummins designed after treatment system.
Both motors were complete garbage 2011-2012. 2013 they finally started to figure out the after treatment systems and are much less trouble then the earlier years. 2011 & 2012 ISX also had a bad fuel pump design and the ceramic coating in the pump chips off and destroys the motor. There is an update, but it's expensive because you need to buy the new pump and all the fuel lines. -
Lmao..... where did you get this 411 ?
-
MX13 is not close to Cummins related. It's a European engine DAF, like Northern mechanic mentioned. I get a kick of drivers that believe false information and keep spreading that 411 around.ReeferOhio Thanks this.

If I had to choose it'd be the isx. For every negative story spread at the lunch counter mine has 820k with no rebuild and one turbo. It's had several after treatment parts replaced but none of them are an issue anymore. To me it seems like the easiest one to do some work on yourself. Dealer and shop availability is a consideration too. There is a Cummins shop just about everywhere. With the paccar you'll almost exclusively have to use a dealer.
murat, SoCal Trucker and fargonaz Thank this. -
Mx parts cost more than cummins.
SoCal Trucker, Diesel Dave and fargonaz Thank this.
