Well, this is the reason why I have my own authority. I'm definitely not on the same curve as this "kid", but with your own authority when opportunities pop up you are ready. If you're leased on all you can really do is expand someone elses business. There's more to it though, I'm not saying one is good and the other bad. It has it's pros and cons. A good lease deal should help a guy hit the ground running, but you eventually are going to hit a glass ceiling. Authority it's a little harder to get established, and you are very literally on your own, nobody else has a stake in your success or failure but you can do well like this kid.

I fervently believe in luck. There are millions of people in this country with dreams, goals, ambitions which will never be fulfilled. What you think people that are successful are the only ones trying hard, are you drinking that Ayn Rand koolaid that there's just a select few who do anything and the rest are all lemmings ?? It's ridiculous, of course it takes some luck, but it takes knowing what to do with it and spotting the opportunities in the first place I think.

The people that are successful are the ones that not only work hard, but also take the time to look around and recognize whether or not they're headed in the right direction. Too many people think that working hard is the only thing they need to do to be successful. They don't realize that working hard is only a small part of what they need to do to succeed. Luck doesn't come into play, in my book.

Exactly, if an individual fails to recognize they just made their luck. If they learn from it then it was a valuable lesson.

People call it luck when someone succeeds. All it really is, is preparedness meeting opportunity.

Any single day I relied on luck is when I made a mistake prior. Sometimes though that luck is all you have going for you in the beginning.

Cant get rid of that feeling like these success stories are almost like final of World Poker Tournament. The last two guys make all that bank while all the other lose their shirt and tell others it can be done.

Kudo's to this guy!! I am working towards that, hoping to get out on my own this summer. I have my own authority now, but I am hauling crude tankers for a carrier and the $$ is good, but I would like a change of pace...getting back out onto the highway again. Anybody who says a successful person is lucky, just doesnt know how to be successful IMO...

    That's an awesome story.

I'm not there and never really wanted to be more than a leased owner- operator, so that's where I'm at.

But as far as the right place right time thing or just dumb luck goes, I don't believe that for a minute.

Sure work can just fall in your lap without any notice, but you have to be ready to do it right there and then. It won't wait for you to get your own authority or whatever. And the fact that you are able to do it on a moments notice means that you were ready and able to do it when the work wasn't available. So what was happening then? Hard work - looking for work, that's what.

This topic is the drive I need to become the guy in the story. I have been wanting to do it for a couple years now n almost did last month, but got a call to come n haul crude instead. I have my own trucks, 1 53' van n 2 of the 3 trucks I have my own authority on. I want to start out with a stepdeck as the $$ is much better here. By the end of June I will have this truck paid for and then I will go shopping for a trailer n get on down the road from there.
