So I am new to getting my CDL. I'm considering what company to go with and have heard good and bad about a lot of them.
I'm sure you heard this before but due to circumstances at home, I would rather try for a regional route (I know local is out of the question). Long story short, my Dad is a 86 year old man in poor health. My mom is showing first signs of Dementia, my wife is disabled, her mom suffered a stroke and is basically requiring 24/7 care. Her dad is not in the picture, but also is in very poor health (like he's expected to be found dead any day now poor health).
So I decided to jump at a job that was a bit more stable financially, took up trucking. I just got my CDL. As such these are a couple of options I'm looking into.
Werner - They can offer me a DG account but I understand they are a ##### to work for on this type of acct.
US Express - this came highly recommended to me by one of their former trainers but everything they do is OTR.
Swift - I'm been told "under no circumstances". Again, OTR
Hogan Transportation - Read some of the reviews and it sounds like a grinding job, but its regional/local which would help with the family issues
M+B Trucking - Local to Tampa, FL company that delivers mostly to prisons. Interestingly, I can't find out much about them online. That's a red flag to me.
Davis Express - I understand they run only at night and have had some issues with HOS in the past? But it's regional.
Stevens Transport - Again OTR.
And Finally - CTL. While they are not strictly regional they do seem to be within the Southeast more.
So anyone care to help a noob out or am I chasing a unicorn here?
Thanks
It's been asked a million times before but.....

I would seriously suggest that until some of the stuff you’ve got going on at home settles down, to possibly delay your job search. Starting out with any company, they’re going to be looking closely at how reliable you are. Sounds like you’ll be calling out until things get better with the family, and possibly you’ll be missing work at the new job. Doesn’t sound like the family can fend for themselves. It’s not that this business is cold hearted (it is), but they have a job to do, moving freight from point A to B on time, or they’re not gonna have happy customers. And you’re not gonna have a happy employer. You’re not going to get the experience you need to become a good safe driver. This can also be true with a local job too. Don’t start a new career where you’re going to get a bad reputation right away. It’s worse than having no experience at all. I wish you the best with you family and your future.Last edited: Oct 11, 2018

Normally I encourage people who are able to get into this industry.
HOWEVER. I am a caregiver and have a caregiver now and then in my own family, what is left of them. Have been for years. Now I say this one time.
DO NOT go trucking anything beyond local home every night until all of your sick people listed in your first post are in either death, private home health care or institutionalized care or nursing home etc. UNTIL all of those people who I presume are your loved ones are being taken care of or RESOLVED the issues medically....
YOU cannot ever be in a position to have a clear head needed to do battle out here in Trucking what with winter coming on. Im dead serious about this.
Post pone everything until everyone listed has been resolved. Then you are free to do whatever it is you want without that chain and ball tying you to home.
There is a reason among thousands of reasons. Some people probably will toss peanuts at me but this is one of the reasons. In my state we have what is Filial Love Law (Family Court related) meaning if I had a sick mother (And I do by marriage still living) or blood kin to a parent etc in the household, you have to provide whatever care within your limitations OR arrange for professionals to come and and provide certain or medically necessary care. To leave someone a relative behind and run off is to break the law and create a situation where that person will decline very fast and not do well at all. There is no dignity in not recieving necessary care.
You have too much or rather too many people on your mind all of whom need help. THAT makes your mind not clear, not fast and not able to emotionally withstand the assault from say a angry roadrager, dispatcher or some random pair of thugs in Chicago. You are truly vurnable. And with a 40 ton 18 wheeler if you make a mistake because you have all these issues going on and cannot get away... there is a possibility due to physics or otherwise you might kill someone or a family or hurt them really bad or even yourself.
That wont serve anyone.
Stay home. Work local, even if it is washing dishes. Start working on arranging care for all those people. There are just too many. Im working on three or four at most and these are relatively routine tasks with a limited amount of hours per week for all of us. But all those people you listed, you are going to find that if you hired home care people several hours a week per person it's going to be 20 dollars a hour billable to you cash please.
That is why most everyone struggle with relatives who are sick.
The biggest thing is called Assisted Living. With a Doctors order or similar situation a sick person with whatever it is wrong can live in a controlled housing with relative peace and very powerful federal codes that govern money, food, hydration, furniture and so on. And have professional doctors, nursing usually a charge RN combined with a group of other professionals on staff to take care of that person on call.
I did not post with intent to lecture. But I strongly suggest staying home and working local until all those people are being taken care of properly or resolved one way or another without any load or stress on YOU. You cannot have this and go trucking. Forget it. Period.
At some point in life things improve. Until then batten down the batches and do battle to solve your immediate problems at home first. Stay home, work local. Don't come out here into trucking.Ryan423, Dave_in_AZ, MACK E-6 and 3 others Thank this. -
Local is not out of the question. Bunch of guus in my class at the private school I attended went local.
