This is important for any trainee or student going into school. At some point with a trainer you need to learn how to go down a mountain without a Jake brake. Because at some point you will have to do that and its better to know how than to learn on the fly.
Its Millis time...

why would you have to do it without the jake?
-
Using your jake when the road surface is slippery can cause a skid. At least that's what my CDL manual and my trainer told me. And I don't want to find out lol
The engine will still help control your speed just not as severe as the jake will. The last 2 times I have been on mountains it has rained. You couldn't have run a greased BB up my #!$ the first time lol -
If used during slick conditions a jake brake can cause a jack knife. You are slowing the tractor but the the trailer with a jake. Jellico in tenn is a good grade to learn how to go down a grade with no jake.
-
hmm we used the jake every time we were in the mountains. guess i will have to try it without if i ever get a chance
-
back when i drove from 89-91 i did not have jake brake if you have to down mountain without it just use lower gears and be careful
-
Yea I've been up and down monteagle pass there on 24 over 100 time, when I drove back in the 90's never used jakes, I didn't have any on the old truck I was driving (wish I did at times) . I drove cautiously on these hill, don't hurry yourself down these mountains ESPECIALLY when there is bad whether. Murphy law will catch up.
-
Yeah. The only way to handle a steep grade in the rain, snow, or ice is to select the appropriate gear and adjust your ground speed accordingly without the jake. Might have to crawl at times.

Hey everyone...been pretty busy and just too lazy to post. I got my own truck and have been out a month or so now solo. Been going good, been running steady, seeing the country and breaking the hearts of lot lizards everywhere haha
I got a 2012 T700 which was in very good shape, very clean. Been running good but started showing an engine check code today so it is at Kenworth in Atlanta tonite. Hopefully it will be a quick fix.
Still have no gripes about Millis, they continue to do what they say they will. Gonna take my first hometime next week to do some trick or treating with my son and prob ransack his treat bag.
Well I am off to a lil Mexican joint next to the hotel. Take care and be safe. -
Glad everything is going well Coop!
Cooper09 Thanks this.
