I agree anything newer than pre egr is garbage, but committing a felony is not the solution.
I've reached rock bottom... (long)

If you can't make it work, Re Think it. The answer might be just past the Hi Beams. Run fast enough to find it. Be slow enough to understand it. Be Man enough to do it.
wore out Thanks this. -
Ahhh, sounds like an ACERT. The reason you can't buy a truck here with a cat any longer. I'm with these other guys, pre 03. Can't go wrong with a red top or 3406.

1° in '06 they allready sold DEF only engines(so no EGR) in Europe.
And with less polutants then a EPA07 engine so a more restrictive emissions level then EPA07.
So the question to be asked is if they could make reliable engines in Europe ,why could they not use that technology?
2° i advice anyone to read the thread started by member Rawze about how it is possible to make a Cummins EPA07 engine perform at a profiteble level.
3° a strong case can be made against the enginebuilders that they ignored for to long the signals they were given to do research in changing their engines. They were thinking they couldget the tougher laws delayed or shelved but for better or worse..............they did not succeed ,resulting in them indeed being caught with their pants around their ankles.
4°Ihave read articles with CEO's off the major carriers in that era and they should schoulder some off the blame too.
The "trucking mills" were expecting for diesel to remain very cheap in North America and for that reason they pushed for the EGR way off building engines.
Guess they struck out on that.
Even if you don't agree with me i hope that the points i have mentioned above make you think and do research.
Be safe out there.
ps for hose wanting to read Rawze's thread on making a EPA07 Cummins work good(a very good read even if you don't have a Cummins),here is the link:

BORNtoROAM Thanks this. -
A neighbor had a dump truck that wouldn't start in the last cold spell so he put a salamander under it. Haven't heard how that turned out yet but at you wouldn't even have to lie about what happened.

Daf, my comments were really about the 03 engines, when they went with egr to meet the emissions standards. The def stuff was the next round of emissions standards. One of the factors for choosing egr was costs. It was the cheapest way to meet those emission standards, cheap for the manufacturer means cheap for the consumer.
