The number should be stamped on a tag on the jakes themselves.

a tag? so i need to pull off valve covers to look for tag then correct?
also what importance do these numbers serve, will this tell me if i have a bad model of jakes? -
Yeah just take the valve cover off and there should be a tag or atleast a number stamped in the jake housing. There is a huge difference between teh 346 and 349 jakes. The design is different.
I have the 349A jakes on mine and have done work to them. Never messed with the 346 but I do have a cat book and it has them in it.
I gotta run, got work to do so I'll check back later. In the meantime hopefully someone with more knowledge than me comes along and give you a hand. -
That would be one of the first places to start, when you pull the valve cover look at the adjustment nut and stud on each position and see how much thread is showing. This is not as good as checking them with a gauge, but can give you some insight, usually there will be only about 2 to 4 threads showing above the adjustment nut, if you have alot of thread showing adjust them or just adjust them anyway, never hurts.

do i have to pull off jakes in order to adjust them? or can they be adjusted with them still mounted? looks pretty tight
does thisa mean the reason why they arent working is because they might be backed off of adjustment? -
No you don't pull the jakes off, although you will need to unplug the jakes on both sides of the jake box ( the intermediate box, between valve cover and base box) and remove the box in order to read the gauge, and as to the second question, it is possible if someone has had the jakes off for some reason they may have not adjusted them. You might take a screwdriver and push down on the solenoids with a rag sort of wrapped around to catch the squirting oil. Your next question will be "how do I adjust them"? pin the engine (theres a hole on both sides of the flywheel housing, maybe a plate with 2 bolts in it, maybe not) a 3/8's bolt will work for a pin, you will need someone to help here as you will have to turn the engine clockwise (from front) when the pin falls in the hole you will be on either #1 or #6 top dead center, can tell if both intake and exhaust are loose. If #1 is TDC then adjust #'s 1,3 and 5 to .067, then remove the pin and turn another 360* and pin again and do #'s 2,4 and 6. Also while your at it do a search on valve lash adjustment on 3406 (saves alot of typing and repeat post) and follow that as your already there.

Excactly what I was about to explain. If I can add, Check the little plungers under the legs that depress the valve, sometimes they stick. I you take the jakes of just take note they are marked front and rear, if you happen to mix them up, you will break rocker shafts, guaranteed. If you take them of check the o rings on the pins on top of the rocker shaft aswell, maybe there's an oil pressure issue.puncher Thanks this.

do you have a separate pedal on the floor to the left. Depnds on how they are ordered but it is common to have a foot switch to activae the engine brake.

Well I learn something everyday, this is the first time I've heard of this set-up, but he's getting fire to the solonoids.
