That's what it is. They also made a model with an electronic governor.

What the Macks had in the 90s. Similar to the peec cats

There’s several I guess you could say versions of the p series injection pump and also the a series. I don’t know exactly what he has but the thing about the bosch pumps in general is they have a governor section and a pump section and each has different numbers and they’re not always very logical especially the governor numbers. I am guessing he gave the beginning of the numbers off of an a pump governor. Going by memory and not trying to say anything bad about the op but just trying to share some knowledge.

I think you might be on to something! Operators manual mentions it twice, once in "Instruments & Controls" section once in "Starting and Driving". I attached some photos, but...

In that second section it mentions an exhaust pressure governor so that might lead me to believe it's an exhaust brake only and not a compression brake. Also, the service section (which lists valve clearances, how to set injection timing, and more) has no mention of clearances or adjustment for compression brake equipment.

Would I have smoked when gassing it if it was an exhaust brake only? Does an exhaust brake still make noise? It definitely gets louder and makes a jake-like noise when on, but not as loud as a tractor of course.

The switch definitely uses air pressure, but I don't think that tells us much.

Here's where I got the numbers (photo attached).

    More thoughts:
    • I read that most smaller diesel engines (this is a 334ci) don't have jakes.
    • I read that most engines with exhaust brakes don't have jakes as well, and that makes sense since they'd kind of counteract. I see some later volvo have both but they have fancy electronic control systems and I imagine don't use both at once.
    • With the jake on not sure how I'd have enough compression to even limp at 5mph weighing 10-12tons. Unless it's only some cylinders, but this is a single stage.

See, guys here are used to heavy-duty diesels. Your 334 cu in motor is a class 4 engine at best. I'm assuming it's on a small straight truck. These things are well out of the purview of the people who frequent this site.

With an exhaust brake stuck closed and trying to fuel it like you did it may have gotten the pyro temp up pretty high but i doubt it woulda caused any damage to anything at that slow of a speed. The turbo may have not been to happy about the extra heat at low rpm but i’m sure no harm.

I had an exhaust brake actuator rod break on my Cat 3126B (C7) after 500,000 miles on it. The spring kept the the flapper closed and gave me fits like you had. It was so worn out I had to put a ratchet strap on the lever to pull it open to drive it to the shop. Fail safe was supposed to keep it open but that failed. Lol

Nah. Tons of us have experience with all things diesel. We just need better explanation and guidance with the questions to the problems to be answered. Sometimes it takes time for the right folks to come along and see the thread who know the answers. No harm done.

And the high egts / load would've spooled the turbo -> deactivating the smoke stopper -> ramping up the injection pump -> leading to the smoke out my exhaust.

I figured a lil too lqte I might be a little too small time for this forum lol. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the patience, reassurance, and advice everyone.

Thanks man. This is my first foray into a truck this size, diesel motor this size/age, and air brakes. I definitely might have some more questions in the future. Have to fix some instrument panel issues.

One things for sure this old truck is a keeper! It's 1 of 3 built, half RV half horse trailer. I use it to camp, haul toys or personal loads, and soon as a race car hauler. Figuring out a ramp situation / assessing the weight capacity of the hydraulic back door when it's down.

Love me some MacGyver fixes like this. My best was using jumper cables as a ground after figuring out I had a rotted ground strap. Everything worked but the starter lol.
