Recruiters tend to accentuate the positive aspects of any company and gloss over the negatives. This is why it is important for drivers to utilize truck driver forums (such as this one) to get a more balanced viewpoint of a company. Drivers do not have a vested interets in whether you get hired on or not at any particluar company so they tend to be more forthcoming with the bad info as well as the good info.
Congratulations. Apparently you are a capable, competent driver with millions of miles of experience under your belt. Too bad you didn't show more intitiative and do some research on JB Hunt before agreeing to sign on with them.
Typically new applicants will eat breakfast at the hotel (free) and then provide an inexpensive lunch such as a sandwich, chips and soda (or pizza). Some companies do not pay the driver for orientation at all. The time spent in orientation costs the company money by paying for your hotel, lunch, and transportation. Granted most times it is a bus ticket to orientation but it still cost the company money. Then there is the dot physical, drug screen and back ground checks they have to run on each driver. The fact is "no-one" is hired until orientation is complete. That gives them time to verify a drivers record as well as take him/her out on a test drive. If the drivers fails to pass then the company will not hire the new driver and will not pay any money for orientation. The rejected applicant may even have to find his own way home.
Good luck with your future efforts at finding a reputable carrier to work for. -
This is not always the case. There are plenty of companies that pay drivers for getting people to sign on. It is called a referral bonus. Prime, JBS, JCT ...are a few that do this. Therefore, some drivers do have a vested interest in getting people hired.
When talking to drivers about their carriers, one question you should be asking is whether the driver you are talking to gets this bonus. It is a cheap way to recruit drivers. The goal is to get butts into seats. Anyone who gets paid to do this may not be telling the whole truth.doubledragon5 and Lonesome Thank this. -
Sure there are referral bonuses offered by some carriers but it is usually a graduated payout based on "IF" the new hire completes orientation AND stays with the company for a certain amount of time.
Talking to drivers in person at customers can give you an inside look at that company. I have found over the years that drivers love to complain about their carriers more than they like to brag about them. -
