    YOU will make .30cpm.

What they do is pay you .20cpm which is the taxable portion of your pay then they pay you .10cpm NON-taxed. It works out better for you.

Example: You run 2500 miles a week at .30cpm and are taxed at 25%. You would bring home $562.50

You run 2500 miles a week at J.B.S. you get paid .20cpm taxed at 25% and .10cpm not taxed. You would then bring home $625.00

It's a good deal the ONLY people that don't like it are those who can't do simple mathematics :)

Per diem is only good for the company, if you get hurt on the job and need workmans comp it will be payed to you at the taxed rate. And if you go apply for any type of loan they will only look at your taxed income. In there eyes your only making .20 cpm

First off YOU'RE TOTALLY WRONG about if you wanted to take a loan, buy a car, get credit whatever you need your income verified for. They go by your GROSS YEARLY!

WHICH INCLUDES EVERYTHING YOU HAVE EARNED, TAXED OR NOT!

STUPID PEOPLE IRRITATE ME BUT MOOCHES IRRITATE ME MORE, so let's go to your workman comp claim.

First off, stop thinking you're ENTITLED to anything other then what you yourself EARN! STOP looking for someone else to always have to take care or pay for you. YES, you pay a VERY SMALL PORTION of your workman comp benefits but if you ever collect workman comp benefits you would have used up ALL YOU had paid in a very short period of time then the WELFARE STATE takes hold where OTHERS ARE PAYING YOU because you were either too stupid or too ignorant to PLAN AND SAVE incase something happened to you.

ENTITLEMENTS ARE NOT RIGHTS AND WORKMAN'S COMP IS JUST ANOTHER SOCIALIST WELFARE PROGRAM WHERE THE GOVERNMENT FORCES CITIZENS TO GIVE UP INVOLUNTARILY WHAT IS THEIRS FOR SOME "MISFORTUNATE" WELFARE GRUBBER.

A brief, objective and reasonable discussion of the pro's and con's of per diem as it relates to the trucking industry, was recently covered in an issue of OOIDA's Land Line Magazine. Under current tax law, a company paying its employees a portion of their compensation via per diem is able to avoid paying FICA (6.2% on up to $106,800 of earnings), Medicare (1.45% on all earnings), Unemployment-FUTA (varies by state, AZ max at 5.4% on first $7000 earnings) and Workmans Compensation Insurance ( varies by state but as much as 10%) premiums on whatever monies it classifies as per diem. Multiply these savings to the company by several hundred, or in many instances several thousand driver-employees and one can readily see the enormous savings to be gained by the employer. Then add to that an "administration fee" that many carriers deduct from the drivers pay in order to allow the driver to participate: i.e. USX deducts 2.5 cpm, Marten Transport 3.0 cpm. Some carriers like Marten and Covenant now make per diem participation mandatory whether the driver likes it or not.

Another informative but more dated OOIDA article concerning per diem can be found here and some may find it worth the read. Whether one chooses to look upon these costs as unjust entitlement programs, illegitimate taxes, or simply more mandatory insurance premiums, the fact remains that, in most cases, they represent the current law of the land. Personally, I think it is unfortunate that trucking companies, as well as many other businesses, have found ways to avoid contributing to these prescribed benefits at the expense of those who labor for the company good.

This post just reiterates my intellectual argument from above.

What this article fails to mention is that EACH and EVERY one of those taxes the company doesn't have to pay are the EXACT SAME TAXES you get to NOT PAY on the wages paid to you per diem.

YOU AS THE EMPLOYEE are reaping the EXACT SAME benefits as the company. The argument that Just because you only reap benefits for ONE, you yourself and the company gets to NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR 500 EMPLOYEES IF IT HAS 500 EMPLOYEES and reaps that total combined savings is somehow unfair, just goes to show how ingrained the ideas of ENTITLEMENTS is in our society.

WHERE IS IT STATED THAT A COMPANY HAS ANY RESPONSIBILITY TO SUPPORT YOU IN ANY OTHER WAY THEN WHAT IS AGREED UPON BY CONTRACT, BOTH WRITTEN OR VERBAL?

When a company pays your wages, your benefits (health or otherwise) and all the taxes they pay FOR YOU just so you're able to make a paycheck and be employees, the cost are astounding but you simply think its your "RIGHT" to be employed. Take a second to let that sink in! That's right, YOU HAVE NO "RIGHT" CONSTITUTIONAL OR OTHERWISE TO BE GAINFULLY EMPLOYED BY ANYONE OR ANY CORPORATION. THEY HAVE NO LEGAL, BONDING REASON TO EMPLOY YOU OTHER THEN THEIR WANT.

YOU as an individual should understand YOU ONLY HAVE THE RIGHT TO PERSUE A JOB, PERSUE EMPLOYMENT, PURSUE A FAIR WAGE, PERSUE OWNERSHIP OF TANGIBLE ASSETS, PERSUE LIFE, LIBERTY AND HAPPINESS.

IT IS UP TO YOU TO FIND AND OBTAIN THESE THINGS NOT ANYONE'S OBLIGATION TO GIVE THEM TO YOU!

A company who says hey, I'm going to give you the opertunity to save yourself some taxes you already are being forced, unconstitutionally to pay by offering you a loop hole called "per diem" should be for all intense and purposes PRAISED as they are saving you money and putting more of what YOU EARNED INTO YOUR POCKET AND NOT INTO THE WASTEFUL GOVERNMENTS HANDS.

    SAY THANK YOU MORONS!

IF YOU WORK FOR A DISHONEST COMPANY OR YOU YOURSELF ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY A SH#T COMPANY AS REFERANCED ABOVE BY THERE DISHONEST RAPING OF THEIR EMPLOYEES BY IMPOSSING AN ILLEGAL TAX OF THEIR OWN, THEN AGAIN, YOU ARE YOUR OWN UNEDUCATED ENTITY AND NEED TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT YOU ALLOW.

PLEASE, STOP BEING TOLD WHAT TO THINK AND START THINKING FOR YOURSELVES. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY WE ARE ALL GOING TO GET OUT OF THIS MESS TOGETHER. GET OUT WITH THE FAMILY AND HAVE FAMILY NIGHT AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY, KIDS CAN READ FICTION, YOU SHOULD BE THERE STUDYING TRYING TO DISASSOCIATE YOUR MIND WITH ALL THE LIES YOU HAVE BEEN BREAD TO BELIEVE.

I'M DONE, I TOLD YOU I DIDN'T DEAL WELL WITH STUPIDITY AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO USE A ONE SIDED ARTICLE TO PROVE HIS LOGIC WHICH SIMPLY IS NOT CORRECT NOR ACCURATE IN ASSUMPTION!

GOD HELP US ALL, AND GOD BLESS THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! LET FREEDOM RING!

Geeezuss H...... Bud, I think its time for you to put down the espresso and consider switching to decaf!! We're only talking about per diem here, not the future of the Republic!!! Judging from the somewhat angry and vitriolic rhetoric in your reply, I'm left to wonder if you even read the two OOIDA articles I referred to. Ryun ends her article with these words: "As I said before, I'm no tax expert; however, it's my opinion that when the company pays its drivers based on a per diem arrangement, it's the trucker who gets the short end of the straw in the long run. You should check with a qualified tax professional to see whether he or she agrees." Considering that OOIDA is far and away the loudest and most effective voice representing the average driver, and represents the collective wisdom of hundreds if not thousands of trucker lifetimes, I would think it wise to give some credence to their advice.

You are certainly 'entitled' to have your voice heard regarding this or any other issue discussed here. What you are NOT 'ENTITLED' to is the disparaging and mindless remarks directed at those who hold a different opinion from your own. I.E.: "First off YOU'RE TOTALLY WRONG...."; "STUPID PEOPLE IRRITATE ME BUT MOOCHES IRRITATE ME MORE...."; "...stop thinking you're ENTITLED to anything...."; "STOP looking for someone else to always have to take care of or pay for you."; "...you were either too stupid or too ignorant....", "..."MISFORTUNATE" WELFARE GRUBBER."; "...you are DISGRUNTLED, It may be your attitude...."; "...you simply think its your "RIGHT" to be employed."; "SAY THANK YOU MORONS!"; "...YOU YOURSELF ALLOW YOURSELF [huh? sic] TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY A SH#T COMPANY...."; "...YOU ARE YOUR OWN UNEDUCATED ENTITY...."; and on and on ad nauseum. In my mind, such rhetoric only betokens a shallow and arrogant predisposition. Do you actually expect to win over any converts to your way of thinking with such talk?!?!

TTR has established some thoughtful and considerate guidlines regarding criticizing spelling and grammatical errors from its members. This is kind and proper etiquette from the moderators. However, given your frequent and vigorous admonishments to the rest of us to "educate yourselves", I feel somewhat justified in advising you to follow your own counsel. I was taught long ago that "...one can tell what kind of wheels a person has in their head by the spokes that come out of their mouth," or in this case from their keyboard. May I call your attention to a few obvious, even humorous items:
    • "...I'm going to give you the opertunity to save yourself...." It's opportunity, even though it is frequently pronounced as you spelled it.
    • "...for all intense and purposes...." Surely you're aware that should have been written "...for all intents and purposes...." Perhaps if you were not so intense in your posts, your intent could be more clearly stated.
    • "DISASSOCIATE YOUR MIND WITH ALL THE LIES YOU HAVE BEEN BREAD TO BELIEVE." I believe you meant to type bred, the other stuff works amazingly well when used for the two outer layers of a peanut butter sandwich. Gotta be careful and not let that intellect get stale just 'loafing' around.
Really Partner, try lightening up on the bombastic rhetoric a bit, your comments may have some real value to those coming here searching for worthwhile information. It is a shame to smother them with insults, inuendo and political rants best left to another section of TTR.

I wish for you safe travels and continued satisfaction with JBS.

Let's not forget your 401(k) contributions (the company match part especially) another win for the company
In my case, as my family's the sole $$$ earner, a wife and 4 dependent children...I take home more money withOUT per diem
    FACT
I did 6 months with per diem (15cpm mileage, 13.5 cpm per diem 2.5cpm lost to admin lol)
without it, 31cpm straight pay...consistently higher take home pay, and more company matched 401 money (FREE money)
