A buddy of mine got out of the drivers seat last year and he does the same thing, drives miles out of his way to got to the truckstop to buy coffee and stare at trucks.

It's an addiction worse than tobacco, once a truck driver, always a truck driver.

TA meetings, (truckers anonymous), Hi my name is Jake and I'm a truck driver; Hi jake.

    HA!!! :biggrin_25523:

It really would be funny if it weren't so true. :biggrin_2553: (I just got back from Peelot with a handfull of recruiter-books and a new copy of "TruckPaper").

ETA: You ever wonder why this is? There was a time that I could NEVER see myself behind one of those huge noisy things that belched black sooty smoke.... now, I can't get them out of my mind. Maybe had I found a company that paid reasonably, didn't lie to me, let me DRIVE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY keeping the 2-300 mile runs limited, and actually allowed me to get a 10hr break, I'd still be in it. I always told myself when I was out that if I were making decent money, all the bull would have been worth it. Never materialized with the companies I was with. If I can't gross at LEAST $1k/week, that company will soon be in the rearview.

    Thanks, driva! :biggrin_25525:

I hope I can soon too. Torn between spending time with the 8-year old, building a nice income in my brokerage, and driving all over the country. I have done the math several HUNDRED times using JCT's numbers, avg miles, and current fuel surcharges. Barring a lot of mechanical breakdowns and lack of fuel discipline, I can't see how you cant make it. Since my downfall in 2007 and subsequent destruction of my credit rating, it appears to me that this is the option that would allow me to eventually own my own truck while making decent income in the process.

Plan is this: Come back, run for a reefer carrier for 13 months, call JCT. I'm not like most drivers though, I apparently don't LOOK like a truck driver. I was told that several times when I drove last. Had a receiving clerk at Sysco in Boston tell me "vendors are supposed to go to the other door". I just like to look neat I guess. I find that people typically treat me a little better when I do (except for Coke DC's, they treat EVERYone like trash).

I've been reading this thread since the beginning (I was in Okinawa, JP then) and have been blown away at the potential, not to mention the drivers I've yakked with at stops, 95% of whom told me they had to slow down a bit and run a little less so they could catch their breath.

Yeah, i was torn too. I also have an eight year old daughter at home. Been gettin' home two or three times a week with the current gig, but it's foodservice and the unloadin' is starting to take it's toll. Not to mention the slip-seating and nasty ### equipment.:biggrin_25513: Will be a bit of an adjustment being back out for weeks at a time, but looking forward to being able to have my wife and daughter both on the truck sometimes during the summer. ( won't have to take hometime then, he he! ).:biggrin_25525:
