many companies will not hire you
and it is thier insurance co calling the shots
the big carriers that are self insured that wont be a problem
some companies dont do the background check until orientation

meaning you might get sent home
others do it ahead of time
all companies will find out your background so dont try and hide it
falsifying application will get you sent home everytime

Going to be hit and miss. Lucky for you most likely none of the mega-carriers are going to touch you until that DUI is 10 years old. Before signing up for any type of schooling be sure to call around to some of the smaller companies to see what they say. Most school recruiters will tell you that you are fine just to get your tuition.

I would say that your biggest problem is your family. Personally I would highly advise you choose something else. I have been in your shoes and it so wasn't worth it! There are too many other careers out there in which you can support your family and still be home to see them every night. As an over the road driver you are going to be gone from home for 6-8 weeks at a time with 2-3 days off in between. Not to mention it is a very dangerous career and can be short lived if you don't give it your utmost attention!

With your current driving record you are going to be the best candidate for hiring and are going to have to sacrifice pay and possibly some other things in order to get hired on with someone.

congrats on making the decision to go to trucking school ....

there are many companies that will hire you with the dui being that old. There are many companies to go to and many to stay away from, but 1 thing is certain. Wherever you go, the best advise is, get your experience in and if you want or need to go, then get out. but get that experience in. and before you leave whatever company you to go first, make sure you have enough experience in before you leave to go to another and DONT leave one unless you have another lined up...

    more advise ----

DONT DONT DONT get over confident when you are at the end of your school and are about to take the test with the DMV. dont be over confident, you will make mistakes. DONT DONT DONT under estimate yourself, you will make mistakes. WHen testing with the DMV, take a deep breathe, think things through, you will be nervous , that is a given, but a good trucking school will make sure you have crossed the T's and dotted the I's so you know what you need to do and are confident enough that you will pass, just dont be over confident and dont be too nervous, you will make mistakes...

advise on when you get to your first company ---- do what they say, unless it is illegal of course. and when you decide to leave that company, i dont care if you have to spend 250.00 of your own money to do this, but do it anyway ....

when you leave the company, do NOT leave the truck at a truck stop, do NOT make them come and get it. its abandonment on your record. if you want to leave, give them a 2 week notice, clean out your truck on your last hometime before you quit and if you have to eat at a truck stop for the last week or 2, then do it. always take the truck back when you leave to the nearest place they say to return it and if you have to pay for your own greyhound bus home, DO IT< i will repeat this DO IT .. pay it yourself if you have to... take the bus home if need be ... you wont have much to carry with you if you already cleaned it out and you wont get an abandonment on your record and if you give notice, you wont have quit under dispatch on your record .. keep your speed at the limit... you get speeding tickets and you wont be looked at again ...

another good piece of advise ... if you are unsure... GET OUT AND LOOK !!! you dont want to tap ANYTHING while backing up, the companies will call it a preventable and too many prevents you from going anywhere ...

always update your logs, weigh the load if you are unsure if its legal, keep your eyes open for everything ...

not to scare you off, but they are some of the biggest mistakes that drivers do and it ends up costing drivers in the end ....

and you already had a dui, so if you have hometime and you want a beer, get a driver or walk ... dont chance it.. you will have a cdl and the rules for your license change once you are an offical cdl holder, you are into awhole new world of rules .....

thanks alot for advice bro...one more question...i am studying the crapt outta the manual and think im gonna go aheadand test for learners myself. than probably onto school if i cant find some1 to train me. My sister is experienced and wants me to team with her and I think this should be better for me as I may be treated less like a new grad in her truck and maybe i wont get stepped on as much with downtime and such. WHAT ARE YALLS THOUGHTS ON ME TESTING MYSELF AND FINDING A SMALL COMPANY FOR TRAINING? I do have some driving exp from military already and if I get a good trainer, he/she can teach me everything I need to know right? I figure its possible to find some company to help me out as I know a couple peeps that have dont it this way. whats your thoughtson this....thx

R.E. West and Milan Express are both TN based companies with their own CDL school. If you complete a private CDL school or Community College CDL school, you won't have any problems being hired. Your choices may be limited, but you will still be hired.

It will be very difficult to find driving jobs without formal training these days; unless your sister can pull some strings.
