When my future employer does a background check on me, they will find that I was in the Navy from 1996-2000 then the NYPD 2000-2017, then I retired from the NYPD in 2017. I have not been employed since 2017, but have been recieving a pension monthly.
Do they consider retirement a gap in employment?

Retirement is not a gap in employment.
List that time as "retired", not "unemployed."

Ha ha ha..good question. Combination of two things: It is something I always wanted to do and rumor mill at wife's job churning out talks of layoffs. She makes the big bucks, so I may have to step up if she gets laid off. Avg starting trucker pay combined with my pension, and I'll almost make what she does.

Thanks for the tip. I will do that - was just afraid since I am not technicly employed, yet technicly not unemployed, I was wondering where I fit. But then again, I am not the first retired guy ever to become a truck driver so I know it is possible.
Thanks for the reply and the tip!!

If the rules are followed correctly, a carrier wants you to account for the time. Not what you were doing. You could have spent the last 5 years chasing skirts in the South of France as-far as the FMCSA cares. They just want that time accounted for.

I retired NOV2018 and didn’t start driving until MAR2019. Every employer, loan and mortgage company I’ve applied to and worked for would not except military retirement as a job over those 4 months. I just claimed I was a homemaker/stay at home dad and that seemed to appease everyone.

Sorry for going off topic but why's it any concern of the FMCSA as to what your employment history is like?

The background check is mostly for drug usage, with a minor in safety history. Makes it harder to hide a hot piss test. With the drug database and insurance companies it's not really needed anymore.

    BIGOtrucking and AModelCat Thank this.
