1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

We generally require 1 year OTR experience. Also, we prefer our drivers to live close to our Dubuque, IA or Waterloo, IA terminals. We are considering expanding our hiring area to include parts of MN, WI, IL, IN, OH, PA and MD.

I was more curious about why so many people on these forums tend to gravitate to large companies.

I'd love to work with a smaller company. And if I find one that looks like a good fit I'll jump!
Living in rural NE Indiana, and needing good, affordable health insurance kinda limits my options it seems.
I've had a couple of offers from O/O's wanting to put another truck on the road, but, without health insurance I couldn't afford it. :(
It's a tough situation. We are not willing to move to an urban area for any price. Neither my wife nor I are disposed to being comfortable or feeling safe in any city.

It seems the smaller companies are tight knit.. drivers never quit..and most of the time you have to know someone there to get a foot in the door.. I lucked out.. got on with a small company..
I think it is great when small places are willing to hire outside drivers..Small companies are the best place to be.. you are treated as a person and not a number.. sucks when ya call in and have to say..yea this is driver 457818 truck 55329 .. :p

I just looked at companies in my area I could reasonably drive to. I was in North MN then so the selection was limited. But my experience there was very good. GOod money and excellent equipment, flexibility etc. You know everyone.

Jumbo--I most certainly represent Art Pape Transfer.
Hippy--I am not sure if you are insinuating something about my company's safety record. It is second to none. We have accident frequencies and claim ratios any trucking company would love to have. Last year my trucks went 4 million miles without a single accident.
Danny B--NE Indiana would seem to be a great place to find a trucking job. Palestine appears to be right on Hwy 30.

There are a lot of reasons why drivers tend to gravitate to large companies. Some offer better benefits versus the smaller ones, better l/p plans, or accounts that smaller carriers have to bid lower for. I know several that are happy teaming at US Xpress and a couple that are happy doing the l/p plan there. It all boils down too what each individual wants out of a company.

that and also a lot of bigger companies will hire guys with no experience at all which makes it easier to get in to business

Lease Purchase Plans...might as well let them bring back slavery, or at least indentured solitude. We have done L/P for good company drivers that wanted to make the jump to Ind Cont. Make them payoff the truck quickly, and have some useful life to build a down payment for the next one. Help them get ahead of the game. For most big companies it is a license to steal, but go ahead and find that out on your own if you need to.
