    chralb--I don't know much about Watkins Sheperd. I haven't seen many negative posts. Plus any company with open deck equipment gets extra points in by book. Stay in touch...I would love to know how things go for you.

    We are 175 miles from Chicago...so it is a full day of work (and a long one) for 400 mi. Plus you have to deal with traffic. It just isn't a way most of my drivers like to end their week if they are already over 2200 mi for the week.

    ND Badlands--Are you referring to one of my posts? I am not really sure what you are talking about. I listed several reasons why I prefer drivers to have experience, and my insurance company was not among them. They give us a fair amount of latitude due to our incredibly low accident and claims ratios. With that type of attitude you are probably better suited for a different type of job. In fact, I can't imagine wanting to join an industry that I referred to as nothing but two faced. Although I am not sure that an industry can even be two faced. I am sure you will be a frequent unhappy poster.

    Cpape I wasn't referring to your post. Two-faced probally wasn't yhe best word to choose. I was saying that as a new cdl holder, it is difficult to know what to accept as a first driving job. The good companies was experience and the ones who don't seem to look at your clean DAC as something they can have their way with.

    I have this view from several threads and posts of complete horror stories by drivers who have had this happen to them.

    If i am not even allowed to voice any skepticism without you jumping to the conclusion that i am not cut out to be a driver, then so be it.

    I will stay in touch cpape. In fact like many others here, I plan on starting a thread to chronical my experience. I'd like to run van OTR if possible as that's been my goal from day one.

    Like you said, bite the bullet and get that first year although I'd really like to see it work out such that I can just stay with them.

    Shucks CPAPE, you've got me intrested too! I've been driving a pumpkin truck for over two years now and it's really time to move on to something better.
    I live between South Bend and Fort Wayne In. if you're ever needing a driver based in that area please give me some thought!

    Makes me laugh hearing about driving in cities, been in the Bronx with a 85 feet enclosed car hauler at 8 am. Driven 97 feet piggy backs in every major city. A lot of box trucks companies won't hire me because I havn't pulled a trailer in a few years. I'd like to see some of the drivers they hire got through Chicago at rush hour with a 90 feet plus decked set of Mack trucks.

    Sounds like a good challenge to me and I would gladly accept it if there was a compnay that would hire me to do it. There is only 1 way to get experience at something and thats to get the nuts to do it and go.
