Hey ladies and gentleman...Just a few questions...

I have been contemplating purchasing a day cab and a 48 foot flat for some part time runs in Texas. I have a good job right now that pays the bills and then some, plus I have good VA benefits for loans and and the like. I currently work 12 hour shifts at work so I work a 2 day week then a 5 day then a 2 day then a 5 day. I was thinking about filling the off time with the truck. I was thinking a 35-45k investment to start off with and see how it goes. I figured equipment purchase, authority, insurance, and repairs into that.

As far as trucking experience I have a class a with hazmat and tanker endorsement. My grandad was an o/o otr trucker for over 45 years and I went out with him quite a bit between the ages of 18 and 22..which is how I got my cdl in the first place.. so I have a little bit of experience to draw from.

    I guess my questions are:

Based on what I have said is it possible to make something like that work on a part time basis...

I wanted to work mainly off of loadboards or what ever I could drum up on my own....will the boards support a part timer?

AS you can probably see I am not gonna be in this to make much if any money..I honestly would just like to break even for the first few years. The reason for all this is the fact that I love the road..I love driving and my current income can support it.

Im sure yall have heard this type of foolishness many times...but honestly this is really the only place where a person can get an honest opinion and advice from people who actually know what the hell they are talking about..

Consequently my grandad says i'm crazy....

    Listen to your granddad.

There ain't no such thing as a part-time Owner-Operator, unless they have lots of cash in the bank already, and its a hobby, not a real payday deal.

I'd have to agree. There's quite a lot of expenses associated with your own equipment as well as the legal stuff. It would be in your best interest to get a part time job with a carrier instead.

You definitely can't do part time Owner operator work. Unless you are independently wealthy. It's like any other business that you own you have to live, breathe and sleep it to make money.
