I am currently active duty military with 5 months left on contract. Is it possible to get a trucking job part time? I am not sure what to look for or where to start. I would like to get something local but I know that's hard to come by. I haven't applied any where yet and don't plan to until I am sure about the company I want to work for. I know I would like to eventually own my own truck after I have about a year or two of experience. That being said, any advice on anything dealing with the industry would be greatly appreciated.

    DRAGON64 and Quackers Thank this.

It's CDL... You are only allowed to have one.

First, thank you for your service

Second, this website is an EXCELLENT place to start your search... there is a wealth of information and experience here, if you can separate it from the total BS that is abundant here too... LOL

Start off by telling us where you live and where you might end up living after you complete your service.

There are many aspects to how one might use their CDL ... from garbage collection to construction to over the road.

Many start off OTR for a year then that opens more doors for you but not required either.

What appeals to you the most?

    Part time ?

Honestly only locals get part-time hours.

Look in your local job listings.

I could see an OTR company letting you drive part time... if they have the frieght and an idle truck... part time meaning driving OTR for 2-3 months and then off...

But the company would have to be willing to do that and have a truck ready to use... they won't keep a truck just sitting there for you.

And you won't make munch money pert time.

Technically if you are required to keep a log, you would need to log your time spent working in the Military as on duty time which will eat into you 70 considerably.

You best bet would be a local Beer or Soda distributer, or something along those lines where you can do a time card.
