In California when I got my Class A permit took a job driving transit bus and got a Class B with passenger. When I wanted to get my A I had to take the written tests again. What you test in determines how you get licensed.

Skip testing in a bus and get tractor trailer and do driving test in that. Do it once and be done.

You are better off getting your Class A, just get your passenger endorsement on the A if you want the option to drive a bus.

I know thats the better idea but its on the job training for public transportation and you get your cdl with them, they only teach you how to drive the bus, i would have to go and pay for school for the tractor trailer, but if you have a b license will you have to take the whole written test along with the drivers test to upgrade to an A.

Driving a Bus is merely an endorsement to your 'A'... the 'P' (Passenger) endorsement.

I drove class B while having my 'A' with hazmat (they were only interested in the hazmat for that job and used a straight truck). You don't loose your 'A' just because you drive 'B' but keep it current and renew. If you have your hazmat, don't let it lapse. Getting that back is a dance with the fed devil.

Okay here's the deal with this job they train you only for the bus while still paying you, and after working 6 months you keep your B license, and not have to pay nothing back as opposed to going to school. What I think u guys are telling me is to upgrade from an A to a B I would have to do the written test again

the only difference in a class A vs the class B is to obtain the B, even though it is the "lesser" license, you have to take 2 more tests. the passenger endorsement and the Bus endorsement which in itself is a different pretrip.

If you get your B license you will then only need to take the combination vehicle test to then get your A Permit. Then you will have to take the pre trip, In Cab, Skills and road test in a Class A vehicle to get your Class A. If you have the opportunity to just go ahead and get the. A, why not go for it, but if the only route open at this time is get the B, get it.
