it's all to do with insurance. their premiums are much lower if they only employ experienced drivers.

have you thought about buses or coaches? one of my instructors when i got my hr said buses were a good way to get experience when you're starting out.

I know! Been there a couple of times in my life... right out of high school, it was how do I get the experience to be applying for these jobs? Even the vocational school training these days doesn't provide what employers are looking for... so how do you get it?

today i went and talked to a fellow who does road works in the region. he builds and maintains gravel country roads. at the moment there's nothing happening cos it still too wet (who'd have thought with the conditions in nsw at the moment!?), but when the dry weather kicks in, he said he'd give me a call to do some work on a roller. not very exciting, but hey, it's experience in a big vehicle, and could well lead to me being trained on a grader and digger, etc.

have you approached your local council? and local garbage collection agency? what about skip bin companies? maybe towtuck companies or scrap metal mobs? furniture removal companies could be a starting place, too. cold calling is the way to go, i reckon. that's what i've been doing and i've gotten a much more positive response that way. you gotta put yourself out there and keep going back.

ah, yes, i see your issue :( up until a month ago, i was living in boyup brook over here, which is about the same. i've moved 45 minutes south to manjimup, which is much bigger (tho still a small country town about 4,250 population) because of exactly the same problems you're having. i reckon i must have increased my chances of getting work by about 20 times by moving, but it's still quite limited.

good luck pommie! i'll be making some calls trying to pin down a date for the load restraint course before i hit the local freight companies. i kinda wish we had the option over here to do the training thing like they do in the states. i'd go on low pay for a couple or few months to get the experience and a start. as far as i know, there is no road freight type traineeships over here.
