Good post here...since you were in business for your self , then use former clients, and business partners as references. BTW wyldhorses...once you learn how to and acquire the skill-set necessary for trucking you never really forget it....just like swimming or riding a bike.

Any company does not have to hire you. They can say anything and they didn't like your experience.

I'm really liking this thread as i am in the same position as mixonjr.Though i do not have the C.D.L. in hand, and was a Teamster back in the day, before a union carpenter and with that said in and out of work comes with the territory with lay off"s from 92 on, i did get mail from companies, and 2 that called me Heartland and C.R.S.T., and after explaining my situation both said i quote " Put you on a Greyhound 2marrow ". And i am sure if i followed thru with the mail and called i could add several more to that list, and i would have jumped at it other than i have no one to take care of my dog. So there has to be more than you are telling us, i am looking to get the license in hand thru a local school thru the W.I.A. grants. I would prefer to be local, regional, or dedicated.

I agree with you. These topics I see where a person says they can get a job now JUST because they have been out of work for one year, two years, or 20 years are leaving alot out. I highly suspect they have a very bad driving record a heavy criminal record or other issues. Women take off work for 15 years to raise kids then go back to work, and even men now too leave the workforce for 15 years then go back to work later, there is a new show on reality show on TV about house husbands who stay home and take care off kids while wife works. I personally believe all this talk about how someone can't get a job JUST because they have been out of work for a year, two years or whatever is not the whole story they are telling. That's just my view, your mileage may vary.

OK I got my cdl I'm a recent grad. My driving record is spotless. I have one misdemeanor 2 yeats ago. And I got prehire letters before I finished school. Actually had 7 of them.. Milton was my first choice and recruiter told me that if I could get a job somewhere for 3 months they would take me.. but after going into detail with most these companies about my work history most said flat out no. Now I'm suppose to hear back from Werner today as they put my application before some review board last week. I mean Crete denied me cause they did a credit check and my credit is bad. Prime said they needed past 10 years tax records with no gaps. Some want past 3 years some want past 10. Not going to name all the companies I applied to but I applied to some you guys had mentioned this weekend and hope something happens soon. I just need to get somewhere and get some miles and training. Thanks for everyone's posts. Hope everyone is safe!

Most of these bigger companies hire/screen by formula. If you don't fall into the pre-set holes they created that are related to the federal stuff they need to do, and whatever the company sets as it's own requirements, they stop making any effort to 'clear' you.

It doesn't always mean you have done anything wrong, you just don't drop into the slots easily. It's easier and more productive for them to move on to the next person.

You were unemployed/self-employed? Did you pay taxes or file a tax return every year?

You can keep trying, eventually you may run into some recruiter who will tell you what exactly they want to see to get you into orientation. (if they are desperate)
Getting a bus ticket to an orientation session is not the same as getting hired. Pre-hire letters or whatever a recruiter tells you, means nothing. It doesn't count until you leave the terminal behind the wheel.

Have you tried Western Express? They're crappy, but seem to hire anybody, and they run up and down I-81

Congrats, stick it out for 6 months no matter what crap you encounter and your gold. Just drive safe. Btw, I believe there are apps for smart phones these days that can help record a phone call. Might be helpful if ya get a bad dispatcher.
