This is one of the most common swr/power meters. from radio Shack. It comes with instructions. There are other brands if you look to online cb shops. If you can go to a cb shop that has a mfj 259b antenna analyzer, that would be even better. Or just go here. http://www.cbradioforum.com/index.php?showtopic=43094
EZ Money Thanks this. -
The Wilson also has directions printed on the back of the package. On most setups the whip will probably need trimmed 4 to 5 inches.
Trim 1/4 inch at a time until SWR reads less than 1.5 on channel 1,20 and 40.
Any basic SWR meter will work.....they are not that expensive or run the coax, install the antenna and stop at any cb shop.
I have the Monkey Made MM9 medium and it was just too heavy for my ProStar mirror.
Over 50 mph and the mirror shakes like crazy. The MM9 weighs about 4 lbs. -
Ya we don't have a cb shop I live in Vt so I will need to see what I can do

Dubs is AWESOME!! I bought my whole system there about three years ago. CB(Stryker 440) Browning antenna, and Texas Star linear. Dubs treats you right and does good work. Grats on the new radio.

I wouldn't trust it until I had checked the SWR ........too many variables and not worth risk IMHO.
-
Agree 100%......I have never had an antenna that was tuned out of the box.
Transmitting with bad SWR will harm the radio.....don't need that with a new General Lee!
Pick up a SWR meter at any Radio Shack.....They are a little better quality than the ones the truck stops sell.
Those Wilsons come with a 49 inch whip.......so 90% of the time they need a little trimmed off.
A small set of bolt cutters or a hacksaw does the trick.
Read the back of the Wilson package......it explains it well on tuning.
Also when tuning the antenna park away from any other vehicles, buildings, power lines or other obstructions. And when you check the reading on the meter have the doors on the truck shut.mike5511 Thanks this. -
For those of us who have been into radio for quite some time, that is indeed a rather scary thought...
