a lot of company drivers were former owner ops. so that could be why you are getting mixed messages.

There are also a lot of drivers who want to gather information about how to become a successful owner operator.

It seems that the mods have let things slide around here lately, there are a lot of threads in ask an owner operator that do not belong in here. As there are threads in other parts of the board that do not belong where they are. Just my .02, not trying to be critical, only my observation.

And I have no problems wanting to help someone or give the best advice possible on starting to become an Owner op, or heck even an owner op that has fallen on hard times and is just trying to put something together to make it work for them. I was new at once too and I do remember being a greenhorn. Heck I still am. But I used the Search feature of this site before I started asking questions. And it seems that most of the thread turn into a pissing match anyways. I dunno. Just seems like everytime I come on here its the same thread just different people. Heck sometimes you have the same guy posting the same thread1. LOL.

This site has been incredibly educational for me. I've learned that I really don't know anything about trucks, how to operate them or how to manage a trucking business.

All the things my Dad taught me from his 50+ years owning trucks was wrong, what few things I've picked up since I bought my first truck in 1975 don't count.

The $3.00 per mile supertruckers on here know the pure truth about everything . I'm just going to lurk quietly in the shadows & await their next revelation.

Best thread ive read on here in a long time, glad someone finally spoke up, i just wish there was a seperate fforum for owner ops who are leased on to companies and one for those who have their own authority, i know that sounds dumb but reading how you cant make it unless your getting 2.50 or 3 bucks a mile, gets old i make a good living being leased to a company avg about 1.40 or so a mile. Ok im through venting now.

Thanks for your input, Oscar. As well as everyone else in this thread. Not making excuses, but sometimes it seems that we just can't get everything done that needs to be done. And there are the occasional problem members that unfortunately, take up way too much of the staff's time.

Speaking only for myself, I don't spend nearly as much time in the O-O forum as I'd like to. I've driven for other people, as well as being an O-O with my own authority, and progressed to a small fleet owner years ago before I decided that the headaches weren't worth it. My primary interest is actually in the O-O forum, but I usually find myself busy in other areas of the site. I really enjoy reading about how you guys run your businesses and I regret that it doesn't seem like I get to do that enough these days. I feel like I'm probably not the only staff member that encounters the same frustration.

I'm reporting this thread so that the staff can discuss the concerns expressed here. Hopefully, we can come up with some type of resolution that will please most of you, while admitting that we'll never be able to please everyone.

In the meantime, we'll try to start spending a little more time in this forum trying to see if we can keep it organized a little better. Personally, I suppose that I'm guilty of something that I hope that some of you can see as a compliment:

I really don't worry too much about the O-O forum compared to some of the other forums, so I don't feel compelled to come in here as often as I'd like to. I think that most of you are so serious about your business - and about your posts in this forum - that it just doesn't usually cause the problems that some of the other forums cause.

I'll start spending more time in here beginning today, and the staff will discuss this, also beginning today. Meanwhile, if any of you see things that you think that we have overlooked, please report the post(s) so that we can take a look at them.

Thanks everyone for your input on this matter, as well as for your contributions to the site.

Ok, I hear the folks in here loud and clear. Let me get with the moderators and discuss the technical requirements.

If we were to require members to show proof that they are actually an O/O before giving them posting access, what should we use as proof?

Probably depends on the comfort level of participants with sharing of personal information versus how strict you want to verify (or how much time it takes to review each one). Could make for a good survey post.

I'd expect those leased to a carrier could supply a settlement stub, redacted of course. Those that have authority ought to be able to produce an authority letter or generic insurance certificate. Not something someone who isn't qualified would be able to produce easily, and not really too time consuming for admins to look at and make a decision.

For a few that might go to the effort to falsify, they'd be called out fairly soon or get themselves in trouble.
