I guess my definition of cleaned up would be threads like the one about "where to get my motor overhauled" and other mechanical questions, these should have been in the garage to begin with, and that is where they were moved to. Threads about xxxx company in my opinion should not be there either, there is a motor carrier sub forum that those belong in, not in ask an owner operator. Ask An Owner Operator should be in my opinion about business only questions, the nuts and bolts of the business of trucking, not which truck to buy, or where to get it worked on, or which company should I lease to.

i don't think it should matter who is what and that whey are doing as to who has the right to post where. cuz next year. half the posters will probably be doing something else.

how are they going to decide what to do with there lives if they are confined to one section???

i found this forum 6 years ago. right as the economy started tanking. i was a local boy hauling dirt. today, i'm doing something you all say doesn't exist.
there are lots of guys that got there start from this non existence thing. how many are posting on this forum is anyone's guess. some are still with the company. while others have gone there seperate ways.

as far as this forum goes though. it should be free knowledge for all. in any section. cuz i don't think ANYONE wants to stay a rookie for a mill school.

people have questions. that's the way it will always be.

although, to be asking basically the same question that's already been asked 1000 times now.

Eh... I'm inclined to disagree here. Not that I have personal experience, but it seems to me those threads are relevant to Ask An O-O, and I'm not sure where else they'd be a better fit. I'm open to suggestions, but I'm having a hard time imagining the alternative.

After a little thought after posting that, I guess the remark about which truck should I buy you have a valid point, where to get it worked on might be better served in the garage with all the gear heads that hang out in there. As far as questions about a particular carrier, I don't see the need for them in Ask An O-O, some of those questions get moved, and some seem to stay, what makes one OK but another get moved?

I agree with Oscar. I also think that Lease and/or Lease-Purchase operators's have a substantially different set of issues and operate under such different conditions than O/O's that they warrant their own sub-forum. You can make a good argument that O/O's with their own authority do too. I'm just not sure there are enough of them, and their particular issues can probably be dealt with in the Broker's section.

I think there is some confusion here. We're not considering making information inaccessible to anyone. The idea we're trying to feel out is whether there is a demand and benefit and if it's practical to provide a new subforum completely focused on business Q&A, with extremely high standards for respectful discussion.

Some members ask questions in a particular subforum because they want answers from certain people that they know are frequent visitors of that particular subforum, and if the thread topic is only marginally more suited to a different forum then I think the moderators are correct to leave it alone.

It's also possible that nobody on the moderating team noticed that the thread nor saw that it was out of place, and if you feel strongly that a thread is in the wrong section then using the Report Post tool will guarantee the moderators see it. However, it doesn't guarantee that they'll come to the same conclusion and move it.

If we run this experiment, we'll most likely start the Business Workshop forum with both Lease and Owners together and see if the issues they have in common outweigh those they have apart. We're not going to attempt the impossible task of trying to please everyone 100%, it will require compromise.

would there be any merit to having someone's "status" displayed in the profile info next to their posts ? It seems that some people are very adamant in wanting to let people know they run under their own authority and are not leased on. perhaps they would even be willing to contribute a few shillings to the forum to have O/O own authority under their name rather than simply trucker 22 years or whatever.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal, I probably have more in common and more to discuss with someone leased to Landstar pulling a step or flat than I would with someone running their own authority hauling milk in PA. But I am proud of having my own authority, it's a lot of responsibility. I'd probably chip in a few shillings to put that under my name.

And for those that constantly berate the lease ops, it would give you an easy answer. pay up.

and it would be somewhat helpful in discussions to have a clue where different people are coming from. I think the confusion is less about letting some people participate and shunning others. It's more just knowing what viewpoint the poster is coming from.
