i one shop had told me 10 hours. the shop that its in i didn't ask them how many hours.

i stopped in this afternoon while the mechanic that is working on my truck was in. looks like rear main seal was leaking. (i had wanted that replaced regardless anyway) input shaft was worn where it rides on the pilot bushing. he had said that it was defently the orrigional clutch in the truck and still would have gone a little while longer if it wasn't full of mud and dirt from having a missing inspection cover. so i guess lesson learned on that if the inspection cover is missing on your truck might think of putting a new one on esp if you have the deep dish style clutch like i do.

i guess if you want to look at it this way the fact that the clutch was the factory clutch and the clutch break was still a 1 peice so if the clutch was original and still had a 1 peice clutch break would make sense that it was original as well. at almost 20 years old and over 1 million miles it must mean there has probably never been any rookie drivers in this truck

well i was just by the shop they were getting ready to stuff my transmission back in. had a few more items added to the list. new clutch linkage, they recommended i change my gear oil in the transmission so i gave them the go ahead on that for new synthetic lube. i know my carrier bearing has seen its better days so i told them to replace that while the drive-line was out anyway. as well as a bad u-joint that i found when looking things over. this is going to be painful when the bill comes...lol

Yeah but it's worth spending the extra few $ and doing it right while it's all apart now. Shouldn't add too much more $ doing those few things although synthetic gear oil ain't cheap. It's peace of mind and one less thing to worry about now though.

One day my boss told me my job assignment was to replace the clutch in the first bay. I said "Ok, it'll be out in an hour". He said no way I'm going to have it out that fast. I said "Watch the clock"

45 minutes later, the transmission was on the ground and the clutch and pressure plate were on the floor and I went to lunch :biggrin_25522:

Most of our trucks were the nearly the same year and model. Once I did my 3rd clutch, the rest were easy. I knew what tools were needed and how to get those air tanks out of the way.

Putting it back in took a little longer :biggrin_2559:

well got the truck back. $3961.82 lighter in the pants

i think i got over charged on a few things but its done, its done right and i should never have another clutch issue for the rest of the trucks life

a few things i think i got over charged on was one, they complained about the hood stop cable being broken a few times, kinda one of them things i had been meaning to do but slipped my mind every time i was in getting parts. i just told them to make sure they let the hood down easy and the spring will stop it and hold it. but finaly i gave in and told them to go ahead and throw a new one on, i figured 20 bucks for the cable 15 mins to put it on so 25 bucks labor. well they charge me 18.22 for the cable 85.60 labor and 7.70 shop supply's. i brought that up to the counter guy as i was looking over the bill before i paid and he said the start and stop there time on the different tasks on a computer in .10 hr increments. then i figured they must have put some new bolts or something in for the shop supply's. after picking up the truck i notice the old bolts were re used so where the f did they come up with 7.70 in shop supply's on replacing the hood stop cable??

then on the replacement hanger bearing and u joint. there description

removed u joint, had to use puller, clean yoke and installed new joint. removed yoke nut for carrier bearing ha to use puller to get yoke off, came off very hard had to cut hanger bearing to get off, cleaned splines and installed new hanger, reinstalled yoke and tighten with new nut, reinstalled drive line on unit

214 in labor. 2 hrs seems excessive to me on that, considering the drive line was laying out on the ground to start with. but mabye if they really had that much trouble with seperating the yoke and getting the old carrier off maybe its justifiable.

on replacing the rear engine seal they got 172.50 in labor seems much with the tyranny already out on the ground. is there more too it than putting a few screws in the seal and taping it out and then tapping a new one in? they probably even got some special tools that make it even easier.

on the clutch job 1195.62 in parts 1605.00 in labor. i can see the parts being a bit high as there was a few extra things replaced in there, but everything that was replaced had to come out any way maybe 2-3 extra bolts?

the one thing i think i got over charge on worse than anything was that dang hood cable. considering they were so concerned about it even saying they once had a guy get hurt cause the hood came over on them, they wouldn't have charged me nearly a hour to replace something that i know can be done in 15 mins. let alone wtf is the 7.70 in shop supply.

that was my thoughts on it. figured while in there im already down loosing work and sitting in the shop lets do it right and anything thing that is out and need to be replaced just replace it. yeah the price tag hurts all at once but but figure in the long term its cheaper just to do it right while your in there

i also have never changed the trans or diff oils in the truck and was planning on doing them in the near future anyway so now at least the trans oil is changed. and i gotta admit the truck shifts smoother now and is actually quieter at idle witch i didn't expect.

Shop supplies are normally a percentage of the ticket regardless of what is done.

I was a service manager for several years and shop supplies was the most complained about charge hands down. The way we did it was 15% of the total ticket with a maximum charge of $25.
