Once upon a time I had a business, and let a guy take my Isuzu npr home daily.
Found out later he was cruising the block in my truck, and it smelled of reefer.
Had to take it away from him,but you get the picture.

When you first start out with a large company, then you'll be asked to park the rig at a secure terminal or yard and make your own way home. That's how it started for me at Swift. After a few month's into solo and my second or third home time I had a discussion with my driver manager and now I drive it home and park it for my home time. The catch is that I have a fenced, secure yard with the biggest pit bull you've ever laid eyes on, out in a more country setting. Nobody messes with the truck, I can take my time stocking and cleaning it, but it does stay parked for the duration of my 34... and no I don't mess with company property by joyriding in it or disconnecting the Qualcomm.

As a company driver any time driving the truck will be logged as Drive Time and I need to do a Pretrip Inspection prior to leaving home. If you are an owner/operator with the company then you have a Line 5 for driving on personal time, an option that isn't available to company drivers.

Personally, even if I thought I could get away with driving my rig around town I wouldn't do it. Not much sense it risking a collision or other incident during time that the insurance company might question.

Name one 3000+ driver company that cares about driver retention~ I will hold my breath.

$180K may be a small percentage of the total fuel bill. But how many trailer tires will that money buy? How many $180K sports cars can the owners buy for themselves each year?

I know a lady who married a millionaire. They were dining with some less than affluent in-laws. I guess they paid separately because on exiting the establishment one of those in-laws threw away his pennies in change. The millionaire who was in front of the group heard the change and went back, bent over and picked up every single one.

With IFTA, you cannot have missing miles. And the miles reported in your log book must match what is reported to IFTA. Off Duty miles are absorded into what you have to report. I have 10 miles to bobtail home, I am off-duty, but those miles still get reported. The ending odometer reading for one week must be the same as the beginning odometer reading for the next week. Any gaps and IFTA will come down heavy.

As long as you drive for a company with electronic logs and even a QUALCOMM which is pretty much all the companies, you will only be able to take trk home and leave it parked till you're ready to go back out again.A small company I drove for,I was like your dad, took the trk everywhere while on hometime, but I was'nt subjected to elogs or the QUALCOMM either.

@Sherlock510, that $180,000 that is used for something useless is money that could be saved to maybe pay company drivers more. Remember the saying waste not want not. That would help to retain drivers:biggrin_2558:.

Really. Why would one drive an 8mpg commercial vehicle to church or redbox?

I guess if it is all you have, maybe...
