The entire aftertreatment system on the DEF MaxxForce motors is that of a Cummins motor. All in all they were pretty reliable in that aspect. I say were because the MaxxForce series has been discontinued to my knowledge. They were beginning to get their heads around the problems but the reputation was irreversibly damaged. Still lacked in pulling power, Jakes were still terribly weak, and they still had a high rate of oil consumption.

I am very optimistic about the newest SCR engines. Like racemaxx24 said, the SCR system is all Cummins. On 2015 model engines, the EGR system is also done by Cummins, so we are looking forward to significantly reduced EGR cooler and valve problems found on the 2010 models. Also, they are no longer "Maxxforce". International has dropped that name. They are now "N13". Big wow, I know! At this time there aren't as many of them out there because too many customers have left due to the MF BS. Also, the first generation of MF were good the first year or so, so right now it is still too early to say. I can say there are literally no recalls yet like there was for the 2007 and 2010 MF engines.

Are you aware which model years Navistar was doing recalls on and performing in-frames? I know my previous company has a batch that International was taking 1 by 1 due to IIRC holes being burned in the pistols. I know this batch was extremely problematic compared to the 2015 models they have, so I'd like to say they are pre-SCR engines.

International has never had a true "recall" which was an inframe. They will inframe an engine under fail conditions. Lately it is oil consumption due to carbon packing. There are certain serial number ranges of 2013 SRC N13, 4300000 to 4315700 that are effected. The fix is an updated piston/cylinder pack for engines that experience this specific failure. Engines in that serial number range do not automatically qualify for new liners. They have also expanded this into the 2015 my N13 with no specific serial number range. We have not seen any, but this is something that will be mid to late stage engine life I suspect and not something you normally see in the first year or two of operation. Never saw any over haul recalls on any Maxxforce or early SCR product.

I'm looking at a 13 lonestar with a maxxforce. It has 700k kilometers on it, one yr ago at 500k it had the engine replaced. Would it be a newer version with less problems? Also I know delete convo is frowned upon but any body know where it is not frowned upon for maxxforce?

The engine itself was never the problem it was the egr and dpf systems and I would run from a 2013. I had one set at 475 hp and it run and pulled great when it ran. Problem was about once a month atleast it was down for 2 or more days for something.

    Elroythekid and Heavyd Thank this.

What year and version? This truck has the latest version engine that is suppose to be better? The mechanics at international tell me not to be so worried about this engine.

The engine would have been replaced with the same model. If there have been updates along the way, the replacement engine would have them. I would say they are moderate to minimum improvements. The biggest thing is the engine was replaced, LOL!

    Elroythekid Thanks this.

Talked to the salesman today I thought the engine was a year old, it in fact only has 40,000 kms on it. Hard to pass up. He told me guys are.drilling 6 holes in the dpf to reduce pressure and soot, cleaning the filter yearly and changing the oil more frequently and having no problems.
