He would not have been arrested in California for stealing the truck. The first thing the officer that took the report would have asked is if he had prior permission to drive the truck and did he have keys to the vehicle. If so, not theft. This is why parents cant charge their kids with auto theft when they borrow the car. Joyriding maybe, auto theft, no.

Mistakes were made on BOTH sides. I give you kudos for admitting yours, something that K&B hasn't done, and probably won't. This is going to negatively affect your hireability, unless you get something local, or a future employer knows of K&B. Good luck with your future endeavors!

While that is true in a legal sense, in the practical sense they can make it so hard to recover the property that it would not be worth it.
Then, even if the op does recover, when stuff inevitably disappears it will be a case of he said / she said.

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone that happening. I just see it as the natural course of things. And with him stealing the truck, kb has not reason to help him, or even believe him.
