What does restriction code K mean?
    K Restriction-Intrastate Only
This restriction means that the driver is only allowed to drive within the state that issued them the CDL. No interstate driving of a commercial vehicle is allowed with this restriction.

if you benefit from doing this, then do so.

it's your license, no one else's.

however, in the future if you decide to get it back, it might be costly and more time consuming.

If you have a full "go everywhere in the US" CDL and you are just trying to end going to the doctor every time your DOT medical expires there's a much simpler thing to do. Self-certify as using your CDL but not requiring the DOT medical exam. On the NJ Self-Certify form It appears if you select Option 2 or Option 4.
This should maintain your full CDL until it expires and you don't need to keep getting medical exams, BUT YOU CANNOT USE YOUR CDL FOR CDL WORK THAT REQUIRES THE MEDICAL EXAM. If you get a job where you want to return to using your CDL like any other coast-to-coast CDL truck driver, you should just need to get a new DOT medical exam, self-certify, make money.

What I'm saying is there are 2 ways to keep your CDL valid. One is always keep a valid DOT medical card and self-certify it. OR, self-certify as not using your CDL in a way that requires you to have a valid DOT medical exam.
