My vision in my right eye with glasses is actually better then 20/20. I wish mine was that easy. My med card is only good for a year and the waive for 2 years if I want to keep my CDL up to date.

Yes there is a federal waiver but you have to hold a state waiver for 3 years before you can apply for it.
Because I moved the federal will take time served in all states to total 3 years.
I was also told by federal to try and send in the request before 3 years and the worst that could happen is they say no.
I am going to wait to be safe.
In the small state of CT I could not find a class A job. I got on with a 3 truck co. Doing heating oil delivery for tanker experience he also did pool water in summer with trailer and I would of done that but moved.
In NC now and a bigger state so I can drive trailers and be legal but it did not start that way as NC. Lifted the waiver and I was going into VA. With lp gas till they look at paper work and put the waiver back on.
Co moved me from lp gas to dry cement and that keeps me working. They also do rock & sand for ceMent plants & hot tar for paving.
Doing this on my phone on my 30 min break so hard to type and say what I want right now.

Just after I my the above post dispatch called and my 2nd load was canceled only go 185 miles in today.
To add to this waiver thing.
When I got my first waiver it was so I could get a fresh med card for my class A permit when I was in school.
Once I had the waiver I did go thru the eye test for the card but when I failed because of my 1 bad eye I gave them the waiver and I was good.
Same happened when NC state pulled my CDL because they do not take any other states wavers. It took a month and a half and work would not let me come back till I went to their med card doctor. Failed the eye test showed waiver and I was good to drive.
So you can get the waiver any time you don't need to be driving before you apply. If you cant get a med card because of your eyes you need the waiver.
As for finding a class A job in a small state it can be tuff. When I started with the oil co. in CT I did not know he had water tank trailers for pool water. It would of worked out good to do oil in the winter and water in summer. It is all about right place at the right time.
Kind of how it worked here in NC. Guy across the street saw my old cars and came over to talk. turns out he is the parts manager for the trucking co I now work for. I was up front on my waiver and needing time off for the needle in the eye when needed (now every 6 weeks) and not driving a trailer much. They were good with that and gave me the needed training on each product they truck.
Right now I blow dry cement into silos they use to fill the drum cement mixer trucks or spreaders to lay down on the ground and mix in to the dirt for a base for roads or mixers for pumping on to building roofs.
Come winter they may put me on LP gas but most of that was over state line so don't know what will happen then.
So look at smaller trucking co. as they most likely don't cross state lines.
Do you make the PA runs also or just the local routes?
If me and you can cross the state lines now I would, just so you have it under your belt. This way if you do need the waiver down the road you can say (show?) you have been out of state but if still with this co. they know you are willing but because of the restriction you cant.
When I first started with my co. I was able to cross state lines doing LP gas. This was after starting with dump trailer then hot tar so they knew I was willing to do what ever had to be done and do it safely. When I was hit with the waiver and not able to cross lines they could have cut me loose. But they put me on cement and been doing that ever since.
I think if you take pride in your job, show you are willing to do what it takes and the co knows this. If you do have to get the waiver and they can keep you with in the state they would. Why would they loose what time they have invested in you because of that?
I think you will be ok with the glasses and doing exercises for your eyes you may not need the wavier for a long time.
