K-40 makes a fiberglass antenna. There is one that has a smaller diameter than a fire stick and it will take a beating. Had it on a Cascadia running from SLC to Denver for a couple of years and it never broke from Wyoming winds. Had to take it off because of some microburst in MO, it whipped around so much the metal tip broke out the upper bunk window glass.

I've been running thicker fiberglass antenna now but they keep breaking at the base. I'd keep an eye out for that smaller diameter K-40, I think it will hold up better.

Went with the mfj base, 3ft fire stick II and got a workman swr meter too because the one built into the radio is junk.

I read a lot of review saying the fiberglass k40 had snapped.

It seems to me that a fiberglass stinger would crack faster from shock load on a rough road than steel would work harden and break from the same load.

I can't help but wonder if weird/bad metallurgy with the whips might be the culprit. Dumb question, but did you buy replacement whips from the same place and/or maybe around the same time?

I'm thinking maybe a batch or few of whips with inferior steel may have gotten out on the market. Seen it happen with guns, before. S&W has been known to have widespread metalurgical issues that caused easy, excess rusting of slides, as well as broken/cracked slides on their M&P line of semi-auto hanguns in the past. I guess it could happen with antenna whips, too.

You might try using replacement whips from Wilson antennas or other sources (cut to proper length, of course).

    Just an idea.

I got a new magnet mount that I can just throw any antenna on. If this fire stick breaks I'll just throw a #### Wilson trucker antenna on the mount.

I did email k40 directly and chewed them out and got a replacement. They wanted all this proof of purchase and everything like I'm lying about a 10 dollar whip... they ended up sending me a new whip themselves for free. Lasted longer but still broke.

I think this fire stick will last since I use one for my fm antenna and it's held up fine.

You don't use a spring with a k30 or Lil will.
