The sat tracking can be gotten around by ways we haven't even thought of yet. Toss it in the trash just before pickup, and it will probably never be found.
We had one stolen with a bunch of returned product, i.e. outdated meat, in New Jersey. Can you say inside job? it was parked in a supposedly secure lot.
My experience with a kingpin lock is that they get some really nasty grease on them if you use them. There isn't always enough room to unhook a tractor and park in front, blocking the trailer in, and in that case, I think it would be better to stay hooked.
Martin had a thing about locking the steering, to prevent driveoffs, that would make sense, too, I guess.

Carry a kingpin lock, old school US Steel padlock and gladhand lock in my truck for use in the event of a tractor breakdown that leaves the trailer stranded. Have only used it twice, company bought the expensive types that are not easily gotten into. When I got stuck in Grand Junction for 4 days because of a fan clutch failure, the kingpin lock was on, as was a padlock on the doors. My customers came to my location to off-load their product (garage doors) while I was sitting at the motel, as soon as they got their stuff, I paid another driver $40 to move my trailer into a regular parking space (it had been in the middle of the lot where the wrecker dropped it), put the kingpin lock, padlock and gladhand lock on.

It's the inside job or a $10/hr hostler running their mouth to friends of friends that leads to successful thefts of high value loads. -
I was told at one place to back between close parked trailers against a wall preventing people from getting at the opening even if the doors were to be removed.
I don't see much of that going on out here. I do sleep better after the load has been delivered and I'm either deadheading, or hauling something less valuable back. I have a big padlock and a smaller one for when the big one can't be used.
I have the kingpin lock but didn't use it for long enough to have misplaced the key, and I don't trust the lock, anyway. It's nice to have the tractor parked on the lot 11 miles away, and not having to worry about someone stealing the tractor, trailer, or cargo. Or stealing the fuel from the tanks.fr8te_sh8ker Thanks this. -
if you have to use a king pin lock buy a stainless steel lock, the pot metal ones can be broken with a large hammer. what ever you buy they all will get grease over everything.
