Three years is a long time, you are probably going to, at the minimum, pay for a refresher. I don't know how all companies work of course. I know one guy that got a CDL and drove for like a few weeks, and quit. Then two years later, tried to get back into driving, he had a very hard time and ended up having to do a course all over again. But that's just one case and there may be an issue he didn't tell me about. Maybe a smaller company will help you out, I think insurance is what will effect you. I know there are companies that give refreshers for a nominal fee. If you have only been driving that bus at that one company for all this time, that shows a good work record, and that will help you a lot.

And you're talking about Knight Transportation. Knight Transport is a completely different company.

Maybe renting a Penske tractor for a day and taking it out to refresh the shifting is an option? It seems crazy that with the "driver shortage" that a company would turn away a licensed driver with some commercial driving experience.

You have the required license to rent a truck, use their insurance, buy a logbook and spend the day cruising around seeing the sights! It really isn't that expensive, might cost a few hundred bucks all said.

As far as backing goes, maybe go sit at a local truck stop and refresh your memory about how to set up the manoeuvre, and take some solace in the fact that half of the truckers there can't back up either. It doesn't have to be pretty, just get it in there.

In my experiences at least, if you can get your foot in the door for the interview and road test, provided you don't hit anything, you're good to go. Everyone gets nervous and grinds the odd gear or saves their very best backing for when there are no witnesses.

At least in this day and age, you don't really have to cope with rejection since most companies don't even have the decency to call and tell you that you're not qualified. You can apply to about 30 companies a day online, make a pdf with your phone of your driver's abstract, criminal record check, anything that might help you and send it out! You only need to land 1 job and even if you hate it, use it as a jumping off point to get the experience you need and try to secure something better in a year or 2.

It's definitely hard to instil confidence if you don't feel confident, so start refreshing your memory, it was 3 years ago not 30.
