I picked up a load of counterweights today for John Deere. They came out of a coating plant and they are for the backside of excavators. When i deliver them they just sit outside till they get installed. Even at the shipper they were sitting outside and he had no idea why they needed tarped and they had been sitting outside for 4 weeks already, but JD wanted it tarped so I did.

Plain and simple stuff to me, you dont pay tarp fee, no tarp and yes I will refuse the load as somebody besides me is getting the tarp fee.

They wrap steel coils with it. [IMG]Where theses are wrapped in paper they wrap'em in shrink wrap or shrink wrap and paper together.

I got a load of shingles once out in Indiana as a back haul for some construction equipment I delivered out to St. Louis and all the guys there couldn't believe that I didn't tarp them and had no plans to tarp the suckers either. I left un-tarped and delivered them to an 84 lumber down in mt. pleasant PA and guess what? They were fine...

the govt out of the trucking industry. YES

but the brokers are pretty much free to screw us whatever way they can.

do you like doing work the shipper don't want but the broker does so he can collect a fee that doesn't get passed on to the truck, or if it does. it's only partial pay. usually less then half.

or a broker that gets a good paying load but only offers crap pay to haul it.

    that's what i'm getting at.

we do the work and have the burden of the expense while he's driving around in his ferrari playing golf.

    the reason we're all o/o's is becuase we don't wanna be company b e o t c h ' s making someone else rich. but we're still a b e o t c h making someone else rich. :)

It's an industry problem; and NOT going to be solved by government at any level. I understand your frustration; I solved mine by finding a better class of losers to do business with. (so to speak) There are plenty of good honest brokers and also small manufacturers and shippers to work with directly.

More regulations about how/how much/when brokers have to pay are NOT the answer! I think you know that but were kinda venting?

This is what it's used for. Most places around here use a Signode "Coil Master" but it's very similar to this brand but way faster. The little car on the Signode moves about twice as fast as this one.

We used to haul new cardboard boxes for the factory that made them.
This was on 20ft + 40ft B-Train low deck combinations.
Because the loads were light and payment by the ton you would load as high as legal.
If local you would go a bit over legal height to get more weight.
Obviously tarping was a major PIA.
If the weather was good we would try to get away with it as deliveries were mainly with in 50 miles.
All local loads paid the same whether 1 mile or 100 miles (furthest).
The closest daily delivery was to a large distillery less than 500 yards from where we loaded.
Every one wanted these 500yard loads for obvious reasons.
Then some lazy drivers started to let loads get wet.
After that we had to tarp these B-Train combinations with huge 30ftx30ft tarps for a 500yard trip.
2,5 hours to tarp , 1 hour to d-tarp for 1 minuet trip.
After that even though the money was great no one felt good about getting those loads.

Im lucky, I atleast get $50 if I have to pull out a tarp. What I love is when I spend all that time tarping, get to the customer, and they pull it off n throw it in the dirt... What a waste of my time, but hey Im getting paid extra for this so...
