Correct but the turbo's aren't the problem with the Acerts. A lot of people think they are but even if you convert a BXS to a 6NZ you can keep the turbos. The compounds really are nice, I have 2 tuned 6NZ's and one MXS and the MXS cools better.

not to hijack this thread, but i kinda have to disagree with ya on this. i just did a conversion on my mxs. because of the twin turbos. kept blowing the top turbo. could of been the ecm program or the extreme conditions i ran, i dont know, but now with the 6nz setup with kurts ecm setup and turbo it runs as good and stays cooler than with the acert setup. i liked the way the twins performed dont get me wrong. it just wasnt the right setup for me. and a whole lot easyer to work on the rightside of motor now too. and no more blowby smoke from the accuators. oh yeah when kw does offer a gliderkit i will be knocking on their door.

Oh I'm not saying there can't be issues with the turbos but some people think that all of the issues are the turbos. I'm more worried about cracked liners and exhaust sleeves than I am turbos. I know in the performance world when you need lots of air and can't spool a big enough single, you hang compounds. Not that the factory set are ideal but side by side my 6NZ with a Stage 1 charger vs my MXS, the EGT's on the 6NZ are higher.
-
yeah you may be right but with the way i have mine setup now believe it or not my egt's are lower than the compounds. i think it's just the way it's setup now. my issue with the twins really wasn't the turbos other than poor quality remans. oh ended up not being a liner, blew the head gasket on #2 cylinder it stretched the headbolts and let the gasket go. from to much boost or thats my story.

The turbo's aren't the issue for me. My W-9 has an MSX with a Bullydog tune and I pull trains and it runs beautifully .
If I had my " perfect world " choice I'd take the 6NZ for simplicity, not because I imagine it being any better performing.
The MSX would likely be my second choice just because I'm very happy with my current one.
In fact the fleet I'm leased on to has lots of ACERT powered trucks doing heavy work and I don't remember ever hearing of a turbo failure. Though I'm sure they must have happened, just uncommon. -
I lost my turbo's because of a $10 exhaust sleeve. I agree I would probably use a 6NZ or a MBN for a glider. Or an Acert with lower compression pistons and a single turbo for a if I found one cheap enough. I like the bigger bearings and 4 bolt rods of the Acert but I could do without the head gasket issues. 6NZ's are getting expensive due to the number of Pete gliders being built.

yep if you do a glider its pretty simple to convert an acert to a 6nz. just did it. except for a few hicups along the way. my fault on that. from what i have seen so far i like. i liked my acert until it puked. i'm the same on the acert bottom end. but thats the only thing i liked about the acert engine. i'm hard on my engines i'll admit to that.but from what i've seen so far since the conversion is the same power as when it was an acert.water temp stays at a more steady temp and egt's are a little lower, but just a little. kurt helped me alot on what parts to put in. time will tell if it stays together.

Do you know the reason for the relief cuts being there in the first place?
-
I was told it was there to make the gasket blow toward the bolts and not toward the water passages. What I don't like is the last 3 blown gaskets I've had on 3 different engines were all blown toward the relief cuts.king Q Thanks this.
